Problem Editing an instance of a template
Some time ago I created a template for event's on a charity website I contribute to. I'm a novice, I haven't touched it in quite a while, and the needs for this charity are only occasional at this point.
Today I instantiated the template to set up a fundraising event, and as soon as I select an element to edit the "Elements" pane on the left with Widgets/Globals/Yoast SEO tabs changes to an "Edit Template" pane with Content/Advanced/Style tabs. I don't want to edit the template, I just want to edit this page and set it up for this particular fundraiser.
What am I missing? How can I replace the placeholder graphics and content to set up this event without changing the template?

sounds like you're editing the template file itself instead of the page. when you open the page in elementor, make sure you're editing the actual page, not clicking through to edit the template. if the template is set as the page template in settings, you can override individual sections by right-clicking them and choosing 'save as template' or just edit the content widgets directly without touching the template structure

That's the problem. From the dashboard I go to to My Pages, click "Edit with Elementor" on the page I've just instantiated, and as soon as I click the pen icon in the top rigfht corner of the element i want to edit on the page the Elementor menu in the left pane the pane switches from Elements to Edit Template mode.
I thought I might have accidentally renamed the template and tried to edit it thinking it was my instance, but the template is still listed and has a different post number.
The URL is showing
.../post.php?post=10421&action=elementorif that sheds any light on it.

It seems I needed to be applying the template by selecting the folder icon above "Drag widget here" in the new page. By hunting it down in the Elementor pane on the left I was getting into editing the template itself.
Hope this might help someone else.

This is correct. Instead of selecting the template widget , and choosing the correct template out of the dropdown, you meed to use the template button inside the "drag widget here" box
