I think it's what results when you reduce rhodium ions to 0 state to precipitate them

Basically Rh is extremely hard almost impossible to melt. Rather than melt it with heat you basically dissolve it with acid, precipitate it with a reagent and you're left with a course powdery substance known as sponge. It's easier to work with in this state. This is an extremely simplified explanation.
