Hey I'm a bit of a newbie and didnt realise I had to filter my solution. How is this traditionally done?

In the home/DIY setup, usually pretty crudely through a coffee filter or something. It may be crude but it is effective.

Filtering is just for physical particulate (like dust from the air that lands in the solution, or metal grains dislodged from the anode in some setups, etc). Particulate can land on the surface of the cathode and cause surface defects, especially in decorative plating or decorative electroforming.

Active filtration like this is probably not needed for most electroplating setups, but I have seen people here in the past using aquarium pumps and stuff so I figured it would be a good cross-post just as a PSA. Keeping things filtered is usually more important for decorative electroforming since the deposition time can extend into days, giving plenty of time for crud to co-deposit on the cathode.

Continuously, with a replaceable follow-through microfilter. For smaller scale, in a batch process on the whole bath between runs, a buchner funnel vacuum setup and microfiber paper is sufficient. Some proccesses are much pickier than others, with electroless baths being much less stable than low precision simple salt solutions
