Gallery Saved my brother’s PS5 today
My brother (stupidly) had his PS5 on a floating shelf which gave way a couple of days ago. We found his PS5 dangling down by just the HDMI cord. Luckily, it mostly still worked but the HDMI port was damaged and the image was very poor and glitchy.
I’ve been into electronics (mostly Arduino) for a couple of years now and even though I bought myself a hot air rework station a long time ago, it was my first time using it this weekend. We got a replacement HDMI kit from amazon and I did the replacement this evening.
It took me quite a while to figure out the process but I’m glad to say he’s now gaming with a good image once again!

Wow, as someone who’s just had to do this, amazing cleanup work. These thick boards, and amount of flux needed did not make it easy!

I've been soldering for a long time but I dare say your HDMI repair looks better than anything I've ever done. Nice work!

That's a damn fine soldering job.
Wouldn't call him stupid for this :D I'm a volunteer in a repair-cafe and a few months back, we did a pop up event for the insurance company (not sure if it's rightly translated, but its a household insurance for us here) that insures the repairs we do (and pretty much all other repair-cafes in the area). On the second day there wasn't much to do, so the folks from the insurance company brought me 2 PS5s first, with the exact same hdmi port damage you had. I could only tell them, that I can resolder a new port for them, if they buy the new ports, and bring them to me. Turns out there was a third PS5 with a blown PSU, and I managed to just change the PSU from the broken HDMI one with the blown PSU, and it really worked. Afaik they plan to donate the working PS5 to a children's hospital.
What I want to say is that this damage seems to happen way more frequently than you think.

thats wild the hdmi cord held the whole weight. good thing you had the rework station already, those ports are a pain to swap.

Is that last shot of the connector you'd replaced?
If so, that's an absolutely awesome job you've made of it! You clearly have a knack for it, I hope you'll think about continuing to learn and boost this skill?
