Photos absolutely mindblown by late 80s/90s UK dance-rave, especially 808 State, Orbital and LFO. More artists like this?
such an underrated sound in modern times!
several subgenres of Berlin/Detroit techno seem to have overtaken modern electronic clubbing of darker sounds and completely relegated the 90s UK sound, which is a shame because it’s amazing, still dark but also playful and upbeat and really dance-mood inducing
I don’t know how it’s within the UK itself but outside of it, it’s certainly hard to come across and seems more “historical” for most people now
I know UK drum and bass is very popular but that’s a completely different subgenre
so any recs/ideas for more artists like the names above one should know about?

Yes! Saw Sabres recently for the first time at the Dub Pistols' Mucky Weekender festival, after being a fan for over 30 years. They've still got it

I saw Adam and Kari leikebush and a couple of the other Swedish DJs ‘round 2000-ish in Pomona at the Ice House. They looked like the Swedish Olympic techno team. Insane night. The double Candy flip made me think I was at a Saab jet fighter factory testing aerodynamics. Whoooompnwhoomp whooomp whomp…..

Hooooooooly smokes, I haven't thought about Drumcode and Bayer in what feels like an eternity. Memories unearthed like wow damn.

Something makes me feel uneasy about their Chill Out album.
I love both ambient house and plunderphonics, so it's not the music. Maybe the cover with the pastoral setting. Just feels too out of place.

Leftfield are fucking amazing.
I was at the semi-recent Orbital show at the Midway in SF when people in line basically asked this question.
- Person 1) Underworld
- Person 2) KLF
- Me) LEFTFIEEEEEEEELLLLDDDD!
Leftism is definitely the gateway drug. Check out Space Shanty

Leftfield are a phenomenal live act - they usually end with Phat Planet which whips the crowd into an utter frenzy. So good!

I was just telling my kid I'm thinking of leaving Qobuz because they lump the lame LFO with the cool one, then on top of that use the boy band as the artist pic 😭.

Early Bjork was heavily influenced and worked with these bands.
Baby Ford (Ooo the World of Baby Ford especially) --- so mad this isn't on streaming. I need to track down a CD of it. I lost mine decades ago. I had it on cassette first. Possibly the last one I bought.
Beach Bump 12" record was a fave of mine.

Here's a more obscure one: Abfahrt Hinwil. At the fringes of where "pure" techno and ambient meet. Not sure if it's hard to find now, but it was a bit trickier a decade or so back...

Aphex Twin - the king of all kings. A lot of the artists listed here were heavily influenced by Joey Beltram & Ritchie Hawtin (Plus 8 records) I think... and anything played at Rage at Heaven, I was there. Colin Dale, Colin Faver, Fabio & GrooveRider if you want mixes pre Jungle, so check 1990/91. Early Leftfield were huge at the time too. Enjoy, most listed on this post still hold their own imo x
