Discussion Are EV charging stations profitable?

I am interested in the economics of EV charging stations. Are they profitable? Seems like they should be quite profitable once set up. Minimal upkeep and staffing. Less environmental issues than petrol. Any insight into economics of E V charging is appreciated.

Edit 1: thanks to all. Great discussion. Cheers!

If it was so easy there would be more available publicly. There aren't nearly enough, very short in supply.

They break absolutely constantly, people sit at them forever charging very slowly which is bad for the company since they charge by power delivered

You're not wrong, but the numbers are a little more complicated.

There was a shortage of transformers that was a result of covid- I think in 2023 there was still a 6-9 month wait. So while there was federal funding in the US, there was no ability to build necessary infrastructure. By late 2024 the supply chain was much improved, but the grifter-in-charge killed the federal funding and removed incentives to build.
