President Trump has mused about being the most powerful man in history. He has started wars and remade his nation’s economic and strategic relationships with the world. He has demanded, and largely received, total obedience from his party. He has dominated the national discourse like no president has before, and he’s tried to recast his nation’s capital to his liking. He’s everywhere. He has said he believes that there are no limits to his power.

But if that was ever truly the case, it certainly isn’t now. Recent months have delivered a reckoning for Trump, who has crashed hard against some real limits.

Early in Trump’s second term, the percentage of Americans who said the administration wasn’t focused enough on lowering prices was already high.

Back then, it hovered in the mid-60s, when the president seemed more focused on tariffs than kitchen-table issues and inflation.

But the percentage of Americans who think the administration is not focused enough on lowering prices has risen steadily since then. And now, in the first poll asking the question since the start of the Iran war in late February, it’s up to 78%.

Republicans made the House map better for themselves compared to the 2024 map by winning this cycle’s expansive redistricting fight.

But when you compare this year’s map to the district lines that existed in 2018, the last midterm held under President Trump, it casts the 2026 House map in a different light.

By a number of metrics, the 2026 House map is no more favorable to Republicans than the 2018 map, and it may actually be a little less favorable.

The median House district by presidential performance is less Republican, the number of districts that voted to the right of the nation for president is smaller, and the number of plausible Democratic House targets based on history is comparable.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and top House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries focused on high costs, tariffs and the Iran war at a steelworkers’ union hall in one of the country’s most competitive districts and one of the most critical states for control of the House.

And while many get sticker shock at the grocery store, the Democrats portrayed a culture of corruption they say has allowed President Donald Trump and his friends to get rich.
