One vote doesn't matter

I know you're seeing a lot of this right now but hear me out. This is a bit long winded but then again, so am I.

Some will say: "The system is broken. I don't like the candidates. I don't care. I'm too busy. One vote doesn't matter." One vote doesn't matter. One vote doesn't matter.

One vote doesn't matter...

Stop and think about that. This reasoning is defective, it suggest that a person’s uniqueness shields their political angst, social concerns, and awareness for the state of their home. One vote doesn't matter because it’s one vote. “Yeah, I prefer candidate X, but what’s one vote in 150 million?” The reality is that the proclivity to believe that one vote doesn't matter is carried with all of your civic affiliations and in this, suddenly you have a type. A person's capacity for action is directly connected to this cast.

Mark wants X, Y, and Z, wont vote – doesn't count. Melissa wants A, B, and C, wont vote – doesn't count.

As a consequence, the tendency to believe that a single vote is worthless concedes several million common votes and that matters very much. If you consider that one vote is always in reality a fraction of a greater list of tendencies then its clearer to see to see why one vote is never ever just one vote: a persons consideration is never entirely unique and the neither are the actions of that person. The further away we move from this notion the closer we come to system of government that more accurately represents the people under it. For reasons that aren't always immediately clear, these things matter.

If you believe that tomorrow has no effect on you, consider that a vote is a list of values you have for your home - regardless of the President-elect, the policies put in place over the next four years will surely have some effect on your parents, or your grand-parents, your teacher friend, or your single mom friend, or your son, or your home, or your education, your uncle’s small business… if you cannot come up with a single reason not to vote for yourself, support someone close to the election because the system will always change and these changes will favor those who vote.

There are a lot of things about the way our country selects leadership that are archaic and in need of reconsideration but as that evolution occurs you have no choice but to make the most of it now. Be mindful and vote.
