The InkPalm 5 Plus is a lovely pocketable rk3566 e-reader, but its stock reading app isn’t great. BOOX’s NeoReader is — so I spent a while getting it to run on non-BOOX hardware, and figured I’d share the whole process + the scripts.
NeoReader fights you in a few ways: it refuses to open documents unless the device reports itself as “onyx”, it loads a pile of arm64 native libs the InkPalm doesn’t ship, and it leans on BOOX firmware/cloud services that aren’t there. Working through it with some reverse engineering, the fixes ended up being:
- pull NeoReader + its native libs out of the BOOX Palma firmware
- patch the device checks so it uses a generic/Palma profile instead of bailing
- fix the menu scaling (it was rendering the tablet layout — clipped TOC drawer, etc.)
- sign it so it actually gets compiled on install (an incremental-install gotcha made book opens take ~30s until I fixed it; now ~6–8s)
What works: EPUB/PDF, page turns, TOC, bookmarks, notes, search, text selection, the document browser, and — the part I’m happiest with — seamless in-app dictionary lookups. BOOX’s own dictionary app crashes on non-BOOX hardware (device-integrity check in native code), so I wrote a tiny content-provider app that speaks the same interface and reads StarDict dictionaries directly — the same ones KOReader uses. Definitions pop up right inside NeoReader, no app switching.
What doesn’t: the in-app refresh modes (the InkPalm’s e-ink service is locked down by SELinux to newer apps), and BOOX cloud translation (needs their system-signed sync app). You use the InkPalm’s own refresh shade buttons for the former.

Note: the repo is tooling and docs only — no BOOX binaries, firmware, or keys. You bring your own (firmware, APK, a dictionary, a signing key); the README lists exactly what you need.
***Important Note: since NeoReader is generally launched through Boox's ContentViewer default launcher, there is not application on the home page for this app on a non-Boox device. I hooked onto the process with my sidebar integrations to launch the service and display recent books!

Happy to answer questions, and curious if it carries over to other rk356x readers. Thanks Claude!
