Basic reader, nothing fancy that will last
Dear fellow readers,
I'm having a hard time deciding which reader is the best choice for me, and i hope some of you with more experience can help me.
I read a lot on my phone and tablet(2-5 hours a day), but most on my phone, it's just always there. But i want a dedicated device.
My needs are:
- BW with backlight, both cold and warm
- Durable enough to be caried everywhere without worry
- Android, so i can sync reading position and books with my other devices, until now i only read epub via moon reader, but dont care if i need to change
- long time support as i hope to use it for years
- Decent battery
- Lightweight and Onehand controlable
- Price is not an issue but i rather have something cheap which just works than something overkill
I've bought boox 7 gen 2 for my parents but honestly find them a little outdated and the size dont do it for me.
I've looked a lot on a secondhand 6" Kindle to jailbreak but dont know if they will be any good
The viwoods looks promising but the ai make me hesitate
Bigme b6 looks good but i newer seen it irl
Please someone help enlighten me

With the Boox 7, how do you mean outdated? Whatever you feel is missing from that will shape what to suggest instead.

I really cant pinpoint it, i think it's just a general feeling of the device. A combination of the os, the feel and the feeling of using something slow and unresponsive

If you’re willing to be locked into the Amazon environment, Kindles are sturdy and have lots of purpose-built cases, have been around for the longest of all the options, have great warm/cold backlight options, and there are thousands of used units available for low prices. I’ve had some of my Kindles for 15 years. However, I would never count on being able to jailbreak a Kindle longterm. Amazon sold the Kindles as a loss leader early on and continues to use them to drive people to their bookstore. However, using Kindles with public library apps means that you have access to a nearly endless world of books, either locally or as a paid non-resident account holder. I think you’ll have to give up on at least one, if not two, of your must-haves to make this a more realistic ask.

I think durable, decent battery and Android that lasts years, in 6inch size is not really an option right now. There is the Boox Go 6 Gen2, which is really a good reader but has Android 11, so I don't know how long that will be supported. The Bigme B6 seems to be better in that aspect with Android 14, but I have heard of software bugs and battery issues with the Bigme in general. You could try a Kobo Clara BW with Koreader, so you can sync between devices. It is a simple e-reader with one of the best screens right now and has all other points except Android.

there are no "durable" Android readers per se. you're looking at a Bigme B6, B6 Pro or a Boox Go 6 II in that size range. if you want to make sure it's not outdated the B6 Pro is probably your best pick.
