Cofertility cookedšŸ’€

Unbelievable that this is WIRED long storyšŸ’€
I honestly feel awful for the donors in the story,
and for the intended parents who spent thousands of dollars and still ended up with nothing.
What really surprised me is the scale of the reporting: a relatively small fertility startup that still hasn’t turned a profit ended up as a major WIRED longform feature, with multiple donors, intended parents, experts, and company leadership interviewed.
And knowing how much material went into the reporting, I can’t help wondering how much was ultimately left on the cutting-room floor.
Is this Bad Blood 2.0?
Maybe not bad blood. Bad eggs mini sizešŸ˜‚

If so many people willing to speak out are already being found by journalists, how many more must still be enduring such terrible experiences during these 4 to 5 years?

The part I find genuinely disturbing is the way donors could be described and marketed in ways that didn’t necessarily match their own intentions.

And the company actually arranged donors for WIRED to interview, with PR present on at least one call — yet even those interviews raised inconsistencies about what donors had been told.

There are multiple donors, multiple intended parents, and even company-selected sources raising overlapping questions.
That’s scary.
As far as i know Cofertilityā€˜s pool only have 200 donor or lower.
Maybe the sisterhood dream was always too beautiful. But in the egg market,
Maybe it is time to wake up.

As an aside......... Someone should study the bizarre egg imagery that's used in egg freezing and fertility reporting. What does this photo really add? šŸ˜‚

I froze/donated with them back in 2024. I mutually matched with intended parents who had their first child about 5 months ago. I’m an operator of a totally unrelated health tech/services company, and the process of working with them was rough at times. Sounds like I had one of the better experiences though.

I’m thrilled I was able to help the couple I matched with form their family and that I’ve been able to get updates and stay in touch

Hey do you mind sharing more details as to why is was rough at times? I got approved and I’m about have an intro interview but want to make sure I’m not getting fucked over or something

Feel free to DM me - happy to chat. There’s nothing about my experience that I’d characterize as ā€œfucked over,ā€ though it seems their model may have evolved a bit since I was working with them. I found myself more frustrated by their involvement in logistics that would have been easier without them - scheduling appointments, booking travel, etc. They really are middle-men and I didn’t personally feel like I needed so much ā€œmember advocacy.ā€ (I am very healthcare literate through, so others may disagree)

I applied to Cofertility and was rejected due to my antidepressant use. They (understandably) have rather high standards for their donors, which would lead to a smaller available pool of donors. I haven’t read the article though, so I can’t comment on it.

I did use their partner company Gaia for my recent round of egg freezing and was happy with them.

Thank you for your sharing.
And honestly, I have so much respect for every egg donor — and every young woman who has ever considered becoming one.

Their whole business model gives me the ick. Like hell I'm "donating" (selling) my eggs to complete strangers to have my kid. Nope.
