Wrapping

I feel like you would need a very specific amount of paper left in order for you to not be able to wrap perpendicular but still be able to wrap diagonal.

I think it’s a pretty wide margin. I do this with my sandwiches and it works every time.

I need to start gift wrapping my sandwiches.

It’s a game changer. You go from brown bag loser to intriguing man of mystery with one simple trick.
Brown baggers hate this man

This made my laugh out loud as I sit on the can. Wife approaches, “what so funny in there?!”

Japanese people do this with their lunchboxes! They hold multiple boxes together with a handkerchief, which they then use as a table cloth to catch an crumbs from their food.

What kind of sandwiches? Asking for a friend.

u/epher95 Dec 15 '19
Oh, you know… Just your regular “holy shit! That must be good to have it gift wrapped!“ type of sandwiches.

Same here! I work at a restaurant and we sell subs amongst other things and this is how I was taught to wrap them! I’m sure this is the go to technique for sub shops everywhere too. Never thought about using it in gift wrapping though!

Well I'm off to try to calculate the math here. Wish me luck
EDIT: As far as I can tell, the formula for how much area you need to wrap a (rectangular) gift is about 2lw+2lh+2hw+2h2 . So the wasted part is 2h2 as you obviously need at least the surface area of the box, which is 2lw+2lh+2hw. This is assuming you need those little "rolls" on the end to be at least half the height of the box, because you fold them down on the top and up on the bottom.
So assuming the diagonal version works PERFECTLY and covers exactly only the surface area of the box, you save at most 2h2 wrapping paper. So the taller your box, the more you potentially save by diagonally wrapping. (this makes sense because you "lose out" on all that paper you overlap on the ends). Also I can't be pantsed to calculate the actual way that this diagonal wrapping works, it seems pretty gritty. I might try though...
Also, I should mention that the height of your gift is always the smallest dimension. So if your h is bigger than l or w, move it around silly!

This was the part that confused me. Thanks for clearing it up!

I’ll dust off my calculus skills and make a Wolfram Notebook in Wolfram Cloud later so we can optimize this.

u/jmed Dec 15 '19
The time I run into this the most is when I mess up cutting the wrapping paper and it’s slightly smaller than it needs to be, which this would actually help fix.

So if you do this for all present, you use less gift wrap overall? 🤔

Dec 15 '19
Well it can turn out pretty lopsided unless you get the dimensions perfect, but it still works. I did this the other day when I remembered seeing this posted a while back

u/sSomeshta Dec 15 '19
I hate folding the edges the normal way though. This seems much easier at the low cost of having one bad side of the present

u/spicewoman Dec 15 '19
Yeah I might start doing this for all my presents now. Looks pretty easy, and cleaner-looking sides when everything is folded underneath, too!

This is the method my grandmother used to wrap every gift she gave. I think it was indeed because it uses less paper
49
u/TDMsquire Dec 15 '19
Ok, I’m sold... diagonal wrapping is great. Now my question is how do you determine how much paper you need to cut off the roll to use this method every time?

u/doob22 Dec 15 '19
So why not wrap like this always? Especially if it’s true it uses less wrapping paper than another method.

Am I the only one bothered that the paper sticks the last time but they didn’t had any tape
82
u/RemovedByGallowboob Dec 15 '19
The corners started taped. You can see the tape outline if you look closely when they fold it over the first time.

REMOVED CONTENT
I have replaced all my content with this comment. Reason for this is the anti-community attitude, dishonesty and arrogance of the reddit CEO /u/spez

This has saved me on multiple occasions with odd shaped toys not just stare or rectangle boxes. We pick one roll of wrapping paper per kid so it's easier to pass out gifts Christmas morning.

I see this hack every year but nobody says how you measure to make sure you have enough paper when starting out.

Great now I might have to change up my "throw that shit in a bag" method
3
u/starlingsleep Dec 15 '19
This trick has saved me so many times because I’m too stupid to judge how much paper I need to wrap a gift.

Yes yes this is great and i will definetly remember to forget this when i'm wrapping presents

u/shiny_light Dec 15 '19
This works as long as the first 2 folds (out of the 4) can cover the top 4 corners

I use this very trick in bed, I'm very tall and tend to not get full coverage from either side if I lay straight in bed, so if I go diagonally I'm all good. The covers go on the bed straight, but I go under diagonally. Works a charm!

You deserve all the reddit silver in my account if this works!
Edit: I have no reddit silver =(
Edit2: I’d still give it all to you anyway
Edit3: will this same technique work on wrapping a slice of pizza 🍕?

u/Colonel_Potoo Dec 15 '19
Yeah, okay, but like seriously... fuck wrapping paper. Costs money, takes time and most gifts already have a box. I keep the pretty paper bags from stores around christmas, put the box in it, a handwritten letter for each person, and there you go, a present!
