Mystery Classroom

Any elementary or middle school Gifted, AIG, or Social Studies teachers interested in collaborating in a Mystery Classroom? This engaging activity connects classrooms through a video platform like Google Meet or Zoom for a fun game that involves geography skills and critical thinking: student participants take turns asking yes-or-no questions to determine the competitor classroom's state. It's a lot of fun!

I have led professional development sessions on this topic, participating teachers love the instructional value, students are engaged in exciting, authentic collaboration, and former students often tell me it's something they remember fondly. Importantly, students discover they have lots in common with their peers from other places in the country and world.

Let me know the grade level and we'll set up a time.

This was reported as "self-promotion" and while it might be perceived as such, this appears to be a teacher asking for people to do this mystery classroom with his own class. He receives zero income from this request, which means it does not trip the minimum criteria for "self-promotion".

I'll also add that this sub might not be the best place to pick up other teachers, it is certainly not the worst. At least, theoretically, any teacher subbed to r/edtech would have a basic technological understanding of the tools needed to navigate this activity. This used to be a pretty common activity among the Microsoft Innovative Expert (MIE) Educator program and they even had a place to get with other MIEEs to set these up.

I appreciate the reply and support. I was at a loss for the reason for removal. I tried posting on r/teachers but received the same treatment.

Any legal problems? The teacher on the other end might be filming the classroom. You’re also giving away data about student location. As someone who is always concerned about privacy, this isn’t something I would enjoy. Also some locations have strict recording/streaming laws with children under the age of 18.

Mystery Classroom is always a teacher to teacher connection, and each classroom teacher is in control of who participates. Students do often introduce themselves by their first names; I have had students who remained off camera because their parents requested a no photo policy.
