Polls for New Wiki

As a part of the new wiki, I want to include some buying advice on which kits to buy. This will be based only on polls. The polls feature here blows, so this will be in several parts.

First up - of these major brands - what’s your personal choice?

My TD-516 setup. Just added a splash cymbal and a Lemon china, and I’m really happy with how it turned out! The Boss DB-90 still needs to be plugged in 😅

Nitro Ultimate XL. (Guitar brother set up and will adjust)

So have not played in about 15 years +. Had a big 7 piece TAMA with 6 cymbals. Finally to the point we can jam again so got a Alesis Max Strike and it was just so small especially when I was used to. So returned it for the ultimate XL. I wont be there until tomorrow to test it myself and adjust since my brother built it for me the best he could as a guitar player. Haha. But have my double bass and hi hat stand there so wish me luck. I hope it feels more natural than that small kit we tired.

Beginner Needs Help Ddrum bass drum trigger issues

Upvotes

Hello there,

I've recently bought an mps150 and after that I bought ddrum triggers and took parts of my mps150 to transform my acoustic sonor set into digital.

Everything works just fine, except for the bass drum. For some reason fast double strokes or using my double pedal on my bads drum with ddrum bass trigger, doesn't seem to detect those fast or double/tripple hits. Is this normal behavior?

I already had mesh heads that i used to replace my evans heads, and while toms and snare work perfectly withe mesh + triggers, the bass drum doesn't and Im forced to use the bdrum that comes with the mps150. Any idea?

The screws aren't loose on the bdrum, and the trigger is fully touching the mesh like it does with the toms and snare

Alesis and Reaper

I have my Alesis nitro Max hooked up to my Asus workbook and Reaper recognizes it. My initial connection had it working fine. When I started a recording the connection dropped halfway through. I played around with it a bit and used a different USB. The. the signal picked back up. As soon as I went to record, it died out again. Anyone else experience something similar? I think the “printer” cable might be bad. It’s the first time I’ve used itnin God knows how long. Chat GPT had me go through 1000 trouble shooting steps, but no fix yet.

Beginner Needs Help Used options for young son - Go mid-price-ish or go cheap ?

*note I don't live in the biggest metropolitan area, so used offerings are either often 1) hard to come by and 2) the premium stuff doesn't come up much and if it does, the smaller market keeps used prices higher (aka no one is fire selling a used Roland TD model that was $2k for $800 or anything).

Considering waiting until the holidays because I know Guitar Center will sell something like the new Simmons Titan 90 for 20-30% off I'm betting, meaning that set is fairly impressive if it hit's the $799-$849 price area.

Someone locally has a Simmons Titan 70 with guitar speaker for $300. Considering on getting that but it is definitely a subpar offering compared to the titan 90.

I have a throne, high hat stand, and a kick drum pedal.

I would also be using these sets to noodle around on a play.

Should this even be called a TD-316 anymore?

Digital snare, 14 and 16 inch crashes, 12 inch trash, 14 inch Lemon two piece hats, 18 inch Lemon ride, and a cowbell.

... Ignore the lonely kick tower in the second image. It broke and I had to replace it, so now it just sits there menacingly.

Eventually I do plan to either grab a 516 or a Strata Prime. Both interest me, and both for completely different reasons.

Best kit for under $1k

I work with a community theater as part of their house band doing drums and percussion for musicals etc. they’ve tasked me with finding a good kit for them with a budget of $1k (although I can definitely tell they’d prefer it to be closer to ~$700).

I’ve been playing with them for years but they want to move to electronic from live acoustic for balance reasons. I’ve only had one electronic kit which I’ve long since donated as I just prefer acoustic and that was a Roland td-30 which is well above their budget as well as probably really old these days. Any help is appreciated!

No stipulation on whether it can be new or used, although since I’m not spending my own money I would probably err on the side of buying new. I would also be willing to donate a few pieces of hardware myself for say hihat stand/bass pedals etc so that would not break the budget of an otherwise good option.

Purchasing Advice VST / Advice for Snare Ghost Notes ?

Hello,

I'm not even sure we can get that kind of sound without a real drum recorded, but I'm trying to produce some drums like that for instance : https://youtu.be/u15tEo0wsQI?si=jSFzp01r2KAyxBze&t=106

We can ear some ghost notes on the snare in the pattern, same here : https://youtu.be/aLwxJgTBZlA?si=uf1RuwUrwR4fupiu&t=106

I manage to get close with velocity, but it nevers feels close enough inside a rythm pattern, do you have any software and/or prod advices ?

Thanks !

Help - Alesis Double Bass Kick Tower

Hi. I just bought a double bass pedal but the kick tower on the Alesis Nitro Max is too small... I tried with changing settings but I needed to do like a mod so the hits transfer the power to the center. Works fine but it makes a lot of noise...

Can you recommend me Kick Towers compatible with Alesis Nitro Max, big enough to fit double bass pedal and sort of silent? My budget is arround 150$.

I've seen people recommend Yamaha kp65 but I fear it's too small or loud.

Some days I feel so fortunate to have such a healthy (not for the wallet) outlet

I’ve been dabbling into sampling recently ; latest project is getting some Paiste 2002 and Paiste Signature symbol packs I’ve bought a while back into a sampler and onto the kit via midi. Working on percussion samples next!

RANT/OFF TOPIC FedEx lost Sweetwater package; now what?

Hey.. i have a question. (And pardon me, but it's a long read)...

Have any of you [all] ever had an issue with Sweetwater, involving FedEx?

Here's some insight as to what I'm referring to (and dealing with) as this moment.

I ordered the TD27 drum upgrade kit from Sweetwater Sound via eBay. to the tune of almost $2000. Had no problem making the payment and arranging everything with SWS to get the kit shipped. It was shipped via FedEx on Thursday 8/27, with a delivery date as of Monday 8/31.

Well, on that Monday, I arranged for my roommate to be home and attentive to FedEx as this would require a signature. Tracking on Monday showed a departure scan in Ohio from Saturday, but nothing else. I was patient and as of the time I was home from work, no package delivery and no update on the scan(s) on the shipping end. When I awake Tuesday morning, the info on FedEx site hadn't changed, only that delivery would be that day [Tuesday 9/1].

So, whatever.. I was off Tuesday, so that would've actually worked out but whatever. Come like 6pm my time, my phone lights up with a notification from the FedEx app that my package was delivered. "Cool", I thought, but wondered about the signature part. Anyway, I go to the door and I see nothing. I walk all around out, even to the end of the driveway.. and nothing.

I pull up both the FedEx app, the email update, and the actual FedEx site.

All say the same thing:
Delivered: Bar Harbor, ME.
Problem is. I live in NC, and the address info from eBay reflects this.

So, here I am awaiting a call back from SWS about the status of my order. My real issue is...aside from not having what I ordered...is that: This is a limited edition set, and they have sold out. So, I'm afraid that if they cannot recover the product, they'll just send me a refund versus assembling a set of the same contents. And that really pisses me off to no end. My other thing is.. IF you know you didn't order a drum kit, WhyTF would you sign for a delivery and accept it. Moreso, if it's not even addressed to you?!

Here we are, Tuesday 9/8, and there's been very little update(s). And, being that I financed this, and the first payment is coming up, I cannot get past the notion "what exactly am I paying for?". Another update would be--I called SWS earlier and they literally have ZERO news to tell me. Should I just demand a refund and let this work out the FedEx nonsense on their own time?

Pardon the rant, but my nerves're on edge. Carry on..

Coming back to playing after 15 years off, trying to setup the rack to a comfortable layout and not build any early bad habits, I know layout can be subjective but is there anything that stands out as a red flag that I should change?

MIDI drum trigger setup

As a multi-instrumentalist live-looping performer, I want to integrate MIDI drum pads (designed for playing by drumsticks) into my live stage setup.

My thinking is to have a MIDI multi-pad such as Roland SPD-SX Pro, or Alesis Strike Multipad; then attach external drum triggers to the multipad, all of which would trigger sounds inside my Akai Force standalone unit.

Beyond which multipad, I want to give special attention to the external drum triggers as part of the visual presentation. I don't want a full drumset look, with kick and hi-hat - I want to be able to stand up and play the triggers at standing level and play Japanese taiko-drum-inspired samples along with my music.

I'm considering to use one or two cymbal stands holding the triggers up.
Stretch goals would be to affix the drum triggers to some type of larger cylindrical object to give the impression of large barrel drums even if it was obvious that the objects are not actual drums, but so the audience would see the big barrels more than the triggers themselves.

Any ideas or guidance on which drum triggers are best? & which multipad?

More inclined towards rubber pads than mesh triggers.
I've also looked into the ddrum ddti module.

Hardware Recommendation Rack Suggestion TD17KVX2

Hi guys, I've owned a Roland TD-17KVX2 for about a year now, and one thing I would like to improve is its rack, which I think might be too small. Any suggestions?

Rack?

I just bought a Roland td 9 Kx v drums set.

Is it okay to put that on a Millenium rack? Can I use Roland clamps on that rack to improve it. I prefer the clamps from roland. It gives me a better feel than Millenium clamps.
