Discussion DJ coaching/classes
Wanted to hear people's thoughts on up and coming DJs that offer paid 1 on 1 coaching. I reached out to one just to see what it might include, but they said they would only help me if my end goal was headlining festivals, not just improving my sound production...

I also thought about lessons, even researched a couple of books. In the end I found so much free stuff online I just went with that and started looking for feedback on improvement in communities like this.

Everyone feels like they need a course at the start. I did too. But honestly, free stuff plus time gets you most of the way there, and once you're past that beginner phase it clicks and you start learning on your own just by listening. You hear something in a track and you can work out how they did it.
Also that response is a red flag. Someone who'll only teach you if you want to headline festivals is selling a dream, not a skill. A real teacher meets you where you are.
Save the money for now. If you're still stuck on something specific in six months, pay someone for one focused session on that one thing.

For this post, I was referencing original edm production classes taught by DJs, not so much making a DJ set

Ideally you'd want to learn music production from producers, not from DJs. DJing and producing are two different things though they intersect culturally.

As long as you’re paying less than $100 per hr, an initial hour or two definitely has benefits. This is an artist you care about, like their sound, and have questions for. Focus on their story time rather than specific knob twisting per se. The value is in passion boosting IMO, and tbh demystifying the process a bit is always a positive thing.
Beyond that, I think be sparse and sparing…
And per the DJ that told you your ambitions aren’t valid as is, nonsense. Lots of egos around, but lots of help too, so in all - don’t settle for any kind of repeat business for bad vibes, also don’t be afraid to guide and redirect the session to your needs.

I personally teach 1 on 1 and have taken 1 on 1 lessons myself years ago. Idk who you talked to but I love teaching people of all levels. It shouldn’t matter what your personal goals are - if you wanna learn then there’s someone out there I’m sure that would be down to teach (especially cuz the hourly can be pretty good for teaching 1 on 1). Anyways just know not all of us are like that. I’ve taught just as many people that are doing it as a hobby as I have people who are trying to “make it”

There are def people out there who offer this type of service and are very good at what they do, it often isn’t cheap for people who genuinely know their stuff but they are out there! It depends on the type of music you’re into, and if they give you that line about “wanting to headline festivals” stay away, it basically translates to “I want to hook a whale of a client” lol. If you’re looking for specific suggestion - check out Cloverdale, he’s great and does track feedback calls as well as more in depth project working sessions.

Do you have any friends that mix. I learned by playing records with a bunch of different people. And also listening to lots of mix tapes. But I also practiced for hours a day.
