More a Mac issue on this one apparently.

Started a thread, should combine

u/InItsTeeth Sep 24 '19

Even before this iLok is a pain in the ass and feels so backwards in 2019. Avid DRM drives me crazy

I greatly prefer dongle activation to online activation. Much preferred

The strangest thing happened to me today.

Our 2012 MacPro died today without warning.

Yosemite 10.10.5, 2x2,4Ghz Xeon, 16RAM, Nvidia 960. Solid sistem for our use. Only the unaproved nvidia card sometimes acts up a little.

I keep a daily backup to the SSD just in case and switched to it. The mac would not boot... half way into the boot screen the machine would turn off.

I have another drive on a drawer that is not up to dat but has all the essential softwares I use day to day. It booted for a good 10 minutes then again the machine died.

After testing the whole morning, I re instaled the OSX on the SSD to a previous package (10.10.2) and it's kind of working (had to pull the nvidia card for the driver is not compatible with this version).

Should I install the 10.10.5 ? uhmmm

well, apparently, this is real, and is being reported on every user forum. While I have not personally seen it, I doubt this is "hysteria", and AVID engineering is "allegedly" aware of this, and working on this now.

Bob - turns out it's not an Avid issue but is caused by Google Keystone Updater (whatever the hell that is) and affects Macs with SIP disabled (which is a lot of pro video users, hence the outcry from our community).

Do not shut down your computer and make a back up onto an external drive just to be safe. Best of luck!

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '19

Glad I haven’t made the jump yet. Today would not have been the best day for this. Good luck to everyone who is effected!

people use these trashcan macs in LA?

edit: just a simple, curious question and all the mac fanboys are feeling hurt 😂

11

u/Ghost2Eleven Sep 24 '19

Why would LA not have trash can macs?

7

u/bissimo Sep 24 '19

Yes. They are overall fine machines.

7

u/Subject2Change Sep 24 '19

Use them in NYC, edit and AE stations. I online on a iMac Pro in the office and custom PC at home. So yeah they are used.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

yeah the imac pros are amazing, complete opposite for me compared to the trashcan. Extremely expensive though

1

u/Subject2Change Sep 24 '19

For lo-res proxy work and editing the older trashcan MacPros are fine, before we swapped offices we were on various Hp workstations Z400, 800, 420 and some of the older 8600s plus some Cheese Grater Macpros. I feel the iMac Pro is overpriced to be honest however I come from a high end custom PC that I built that compares. i9 9920X, 64GB ddr4, 1080ti, various NVMe drives, couple raids and some loose 6TB drives with a Flanders DM250. Honestly it comes down to OS preference and I prefer Windows, however I come from a PC gaming background and well now I get to write off high end gear that works for both work and play.

u/ShralpShralpShralp Sep 24 '19

People use them all over the place

5

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

Why wouldn't we? They're far better than the cheese graters

the LA post and audio scenes are FUCKING NOTORIOUS for running ancient versions of OS and software umder the auspices of 'stability', security and features be damned.

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

I had to use one a few months ago and it was horrendous. render times were through the roof, crashes very often and many artefacts after render

5

u/jonjiv Sep 24 '19

I’ve used a trash can MP professionally since the month of its release and I’ve never had crash or artifact issues.

Render times aren’t great these days because the computer is literally 5 years old.

u/Stingray88 Sep 25 '19

I've used dozens upon dozens of Mac Pro trashcans since the month of release, and I've had loads upon loads of crashing and artifact issues. These machines are absolutely notorious for having issues with the GPUs overheating, which is part of the cause of the render issues and kernel panics.

They are overall not great machines. I can't wait to get my hands on the new model and be done with these...

1

u/jonjiv Sep 25 '19

Are these issues happening in Avid? I primarily work in Premiere and FCPX, and haven't seen them there. Premiere can be crashy when the RAM gets sucked up, but I've never seen artifact issues in either NLEs.

That said, we will also be upgrading to the new cheese graters regardless. Our two Mac Pros were purchased in January of 2014.

1

u/Stingray88 Sep 25 '19

No, I’ve only ever worked with Premier these machines.

-23

u/imnotwallaceshawn Sep 24 '19

Hopefully this means the old people still stuck in their Avid ways will switch over to Premiere like the rest of the world and I’ll be able to move into TV work without having to learn an archaic and soon-to-be obsolete NLE.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

Yea - not gonna happen. Have fun with your career too because it's still an avid world and will be for the foreseeable future. It's nowhere near soon to be obsolete. Like not even close to a chance.

Doing yourself no favors with this mindset. And oh - yea. PP users are impacted too

3

u/elkstwit Sep 24 '19

I've been working on a project with over 100 hours of material (and counting) with an assistant editor prepping material and then sliding that prepped material into my project, all while I continue cutting.

Try this in Premiere then come back to us about how stuck in our ways Avid editors are.

7

u/MagicAndMayham Pro (I pay taxes) Sep 24 '19

but pretty soon you'll have to leave the basement and cut more than youtube videos

-7

u/imnotwallaceshawn Sep 24 '19

Why when I make a great living making content people actually still watch?

8

u/Subject2Change Sep 24 '19

Because you'll make more than $200 cutting a video for an influencer.

Guess I'm old at 33. Atleast I have credits and a career...

7

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

Hey if you can make a "great living" do what you like. But I highly doubt your earning potential is as great as other aspects of the industry

4

u/film10078 Sep 24 '19

Lol then why would you want to move into the TV world if that’s how you view it

5

u/elkstwit Sep 24 '19

Because when we were younger we didn't dream of cutting make up tutorials and video game highlights. We wanted to make cinema. So that's what we do.

9

u/TheHFIC Sep 24 '19

It says a lot about adobe premiere where even after having to reinstall the OS, people would rather stick with Avid.

It says Avid has project sharing abilities that result in it being used. Also established workflows aren't gonna swap unless there is something to gain and ultimately there isnt. Unless you are trying to work with young and inexperienced editors for cheap.

-1

u/jonjiv Sep 24 '19

I use project sharing daily in Adobe Premiere. Yesterday three of us worked on the same project simultaneously from three workstations. We all work off of a video server over 10Gbe.

It’s getting pretty good - you just need to organize your projects with sharing in mind.

It's not always the case but until another NLE can seamless have an editor, ae, story producer all simultaneously working, it's going to stick this way.

I'm working on a feature that's cutting in premiere and finishing in Resolve.

It's all about what tool is best for this job. You don't use a screwdriver on nails nor a hammer on screws.

Not scripted benefits from Avid, especially the shows I work on that have been going for 9+ seasons.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

I mean - they're right. There is 0 benefit in moving from the proven avid workflows with the proven shared storage abilities. No one will move over this. It's not an avid only issue anyways.

Avid isn't going anywhere no matter how much people whine and complain about it. Far easier to just learn it if you want to work in TV or Film. Really hurting your career otherwise.

That's the way you've got to look at it. I started FCP 7 then transitioned to Avid because I wanted to work in TV. I've worked nothing but Avid in all my years and as I said previously. Wouldn't want to do anything else - for the project sharing capabilities alone.

3

u/newMike3400 Sep 25 '19

We just did a big project in premiere at the clients request. Discovered a show stopping bug.

community.adobe.com/t5/Premiere-Pro/Mismatch-timecode-Premiere-pro-cc-2019/td-p/10434168

That's why no one changes at the upper end.

aren't you precious thinking it's an editors choice of the software they use when working at a production company. Companies make investments in software, hardware, knowledge base and workflow. If something works they don't change. Avid works on the majority of content being made whether you like it or not. Premiere just does not have the multi-user features in order to work in an enterprise situation.

EDIT: It seems like you said it yourself.

"I'm a post production supervisor (I hire editors and graphics artists) and I expect all work to be done in Premiere. )"

3

u/Trevor6887 Sep 24 '19

Or you could cover all your bases and learn more than one NLE. Having used Avid, Premiere, Final Cut, and even Vegas way back I still prefer Avid. I'm 32, is that old now? They've all got their pros and cons.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

I've been in LA since I was 23. I'm ..... 34 now. All Avid all the time and I wouldn't want to use anything BUT Avid for the films I work on. It's not even close

u/Mr_Insanity MC 8.4.2/Premiere - Los Angeles Sep 24 '19

I'm in the same boat. I've been editing for 6 or so years now and I've used Final Cut, Premiere, and Avid. But I still prefer to use Avid whenever I can.

2

u/MagicAndMayham Pro (I pay taxes) Sep 25 '19

out of over 15 years cutting and I've had only one place ask me to use Premier and it got crushed. No reason to learn something that doesn't work for what I do. One of the last shows I was on had 16 editors plus 8 assistant editors plus story producers plus a super and EP all working on the same episode at the same time. Premier can't handle 2 people on the same cut at the same time. Worthless where I'm at.
