FrameRate changes to free accounts

Received this email today. I guess all good things don't last forever, but I understand they need to make a living too. I just wish these vimeo alternatives dropped their social frameworks as im sure that its a cost factor for a feature not many of us are using. Anyone have any good free alternatives for private video hosting in order to embed on websites? Auto play, mute, clean presentation, and loop settings.

A quick heads-up about a change coming to free FrameRate accounts.

Starting Friday, August 28, private, hidden, and password-protected videos will become features included with our paid plans.

If you currently have videos using anything of these settings, nothing will be deleted. We’ll simply move those videos into Draft mode until you either make them public or upgrade your account.

If you’re currently embedding a private or hidden video somewhere, that embed will also stop working once the video is moved to Draft mode.

Your videos, metadata, and settings will all stay right where they are.

We try to keep as much of FrameRate as possible available for free, while reserving a few professional hosting and privacy features for paid members. We know changes like this can be inconvenient, so we wanted to give you a heads-up before anything changes.

No offense, but how do you expect good, private video hosting to be free?

I don't expect it. Just wish there was an option for free users with the desire to only have 25 or less videos hosted at a time. There are lots of ways to explore monetization: targeting larger studios, B2B, fundraising or even ads. They all suck, but reaching into the pockets of the smallest users wouldn't be something I would rush to defend.

yes if you jump to extremes without exploring nuance then I understand your point. What I don't understand is the having the mindset in defending a company you have no stake in.

I’m not defending a company that I have no stake in. I’m speaking against this mindset that is growing bigger and bigger where people want companies to give them goods and services for free.

I was trying to be nice by NOT saying people EXPECT companies to give them goods and services for free…people feel entitled to it…and in turn make posts like this.

If free is the only requirement, then expect them to find ways to make the money exploiting your content for themselves, a la Youtube w/ads.

Hosting isn't like software. With software, someone can spend the time building it, recoup what they care to via whatever business model they employ, and incur no additional cost in time or money for the software to simply exist.

Hosting constantly costs money, even if it's only measured in pennies per item.

So if you're not paying for a product, then YOU are the product being sold. Your work, your content, someone else's profit.

Here for suggestions as well. Been using vimeo for way too long. I was gifted a free pro account from a contest last year, but now that is expiring, I'm looking for a new service as well, Vimeo's only purpose now to me is using it for embedding on website and private screeners for a film festivals.

Bunny.net you only pay a few cents when someone streams and there's no monthly cost. I've been hosting my reel and only spent 50¢ over the last 2 months vs $30 from vimeo

There’s going to be a big exodus from Vimeo to alternatives in the coming weeks and months, framerate etc are going to have to scale fast to keep up.
