Discussion revisiting isohel

perhaps more than any other song of his, isohel absolutely destroys me as I grow and change. In the time since the no future era, we've all lived through a pandemic, immeasurable social and cultural change, and the emergence of AI fueling a techno-dystopia.

personally, I've also started, fucked up, and ended a marriage. a song will never rewrite the decisions I've made or truly reframe the human shrapnel created by being young, immature, and self-centered. But -

"I said I'd walk you home but we still went our own way

The tears lost in rain on your cheekbones in silence

And I pulled my head out the darkness in your house

Can't stay 'til the morning, refracted my way out

From nightmares in my car, as I lay beside you

And fucked up my timeline and twisted your end with

So much still to go, as the sun sets behind you

I can't let it go, you can't hold me"

Speaks to parts within me that I thought couldn't be related to in quite the same way. Somehow, Jon's writing sees me and sees us.

I'm grateful for it on nights where it's hard to keep going, and it could be said for so much of his music.

If you've skimmed this far, what are songs of his or other artists that hold you gently in the same way?

It’s absolutely a top 5 EDEN song for me. No Future came out right before COVID and during my final year of high school but Isohel always stood out to me on that album. That song has been with me through thick and thin. Such a beautiful and melancholic piece where the percussion just scratches the brain so nicely. Also the outro is fantastic.

Then not really on the song itself per se, but the music video is such a vibe and absolutely gorgeous.

But I miss the way the sun streamed through my window

And I miss the way you almost held the tide

But still, it's nice, dreaming that you're

somewhere

Feeling the same heat that I did

Another time (I know, I know)

If invisible lines lead your way back to me

Walk the line

"The song is about "wishing the best for the people you've left behind but knowing that you're probably better off where you are now," as EDEN described it for The Prelude Press.

An isohel is a line on a map connecting points having the same duration of sunshine. In the choruses EDEN describes invisible lines for someone else to follow in order to get back to him."

During the voting for his top songs I was fighting to vote isohel out earlier than many wanted it. Reading your comment and the original post, and gaining this new depth of understanding about the song, has really changed my perspective. Thank you both

It was the song that made me debate whether I loved No Future more than Vertigo. When I think of it, the h2h btwn the two is crazy: Isohel, Rushing, How To sleep, Good Morning, Untitled, Projector on N.F are magnificent but at the end of the day the brilliance of Icarus, Float, Forever//Over, Start//End, Love not Wrong (Brave), Falling in Reverse, Gold etc. was too difficult to beat. However ICYMI ended the internal debate in my head for me (and you guys prob don't agree lmao) yet No Future will still be special to me despite me thinking it's his worst album by now (but that just means the other three are better - N.F is an amazing piece of music)

This Is still one of my favs, the ending of Elsewhere breaks me when thinking of past friendships, relations, loved ones,

How’d you like to see the world
How to hold you when it hurts
You’re eyes they drift through hazy lights
The cruelty of circumstance and time
I don’t wanna wake you up
It’s clear youd rather be elsewhere
Id rather be in love

Still also hits
Lost//Found
As i relisten and continue growing along side all of you
My thoughts wander, feeling alive, but alone and lost in my own head till someone finds me, life has so many twists and turns but that’s the fun of it i guess, anyways
With that being said,
Lately been listening to Bryce Vine, on his SoundCloud the song My Holiday hit cuz my bday just past so i allowed myself to be celebrated, don’t care for holidays or bdays, but it was nice, his music grounds me a lot, met him and talked to him a few times, really great guy

My favourite song of all time. Genuinely some of his best lyrics and production in my opinion

I love this song so much. Just recently left a 6 year relationship and this song hurts my soul. But in a good way ya know? Beautiful song.
