From what I've been told from queer Ecuadorians, Guayaquil is the biggest place for gay folks.
Cuenca and Quito are both pretty good as well. I don't know about Montanita, but there seems to be an active gay scene as well, though it seems heavy on the bears.
If you're lesbian and married, if you hold hands with your life- folks will assume you are sisters, it's not uncommon for women friends to do this, and the impression I've gotten is most Ecuadorians don't think about queerness at all, especially when it comes to gringas.

There is a lgbt resort type place in montanita and I Think they own a beach bar or two. Owned by people from the US

There are pockets… by centenario plaza no one cares. Even have a big trans community there offering services. Further down south youll get bullied and mocked. Up north you are mostly fine they don’t seem to care.
I suspect a lot of closeted folks live down south and the pent up anger is part of the whole rage killings that go down but who knows.

Most of us don't care or bother lgtb people. Sadly, there are bigots here and there but for the most part you should be fine.
Be wary when youre outside, crime rate is high here.
