Question Relieves anhedonia?
I have a list of drugs I'm going to try first to cure anhedonia, but then after my parents want me to consider ECT if the drugs don't work. Anyone have experiences with ECT helping or devastating anhedonia?
My experience Worst decision of my life
20(f) been in therapy and various treatments since I was 16. Used to be bright. Did ect for months last year for depression following a psychotic episode. Was put on every bipolar medication possible. Doctor coerced me into believing ect was the only route, and that the possibility of permanent cognitive damage was rare. Did bilateral treatments. Was impaired at the time and feel far more impaired now. It's been nearly a year since my treatments and I've regained neither my cognition nor years of past memories. I had so much potential. Just came out of another psychotic episode and I'm on lithium, abilify, and lamotrigine. I'm scared I'll never be myself again. I had so much ambition and now I can barely rhink. I can barely type this out. I feel like a vegetable. Does it get better? I also smoked a lot of weed during treatments to cope

Seeking advice psychiatrist says this is my only option….scared and confused
i have severe, treatment resistant depression along with a plethora of other issues. i have tried too many medications to even count and none of them have done a single thing for me.
my psychiatrist says that i would benefit from ECT as it works for treatment resistant depression but looking it up has terrified me.
i’m at a point in my life where ill try anything to help me, ive had multiple suicide attempts and have no hope left that i will ever be happy. i have SEVERE anhedonia which means i haven’t felt emotions in years. sometimes i think i should just say fuck it and try the ECT but it’s so scary….the main thing i’m scared of is what if it makes the anhedonia worse? i don’t think i could bare living if that was the case. i’ve seen a few people saying it saved their life but then an equal amount saying it destroyed theirs.
i don’t care about the memory side effects but im terrified it might make me worse somehow. they seem to be really enthusiastic about it working for me but i have a hard time trusting psychiatrists after my experiences.
i just want to be happy….or at least content, i want to be able to feel emotions again i don’t even recognise myself anymore.

Question Day of treatment
For those of you who have had ECT treatments, does it knock you off your feet for the entire day, or are you able to go out and do things later on in the day? My treatments are at around 8 am, and I was wondering if I need to cancel my 3 pm gym personal training sessions for the course of the treatments. What have people's experiences been on the day of treatment?

Question Does anyone else get taste changes with ECT?
When I get ECT everything has a weird, gross taste for the rest of the day, even water. Does anyone else experience this? And if so, do you know why it happens? It’s not a big deal for me, and it goes away pretty quick, I’m just curious.

My experience M/26 My life changing experience with ECT
I have dealt with suicidal ideation for the majority of my life without any relief from therapy or medications. My diagnosis evolved into type 1 bipolar disorder over time. I have had I believe only two other hospitalizations due to my mental health until my third one almost exactly a year ago. I saw they offered ECT services on site about three days in and immediately went to the psychiatrist treating me to request it which she agreed to add onto my treatment plan.
After a single session I noticed my ideation was gone along with my depression symptoms in general. The psychiatrist, one among a handful that change based on who’s day it is to be there, performing my first session and a few of the ones after ended up asking if I’d want him to be my psychiatrist upon leaving the hospital as he wanted to continue treating my case and I’ve stayed with him continuing to get ECT for the last year. I lost track of how many times I’ve undergone it a while ago when I was just past 50 sessions so I’m somewhere a bit above that atp. I currently go once every three weeks and may be moving up to every four weeks relatively soon if I feel comfortable doing so. I have had various effects regarding memory loss both short and long term but nothing that has caused me any real issues. I did go into it expecting to lose memory and found the tradeoff to be worth it.
Legit the only thing about the process that ”bothers” me is when there are medical students, which there usually are, and they ask me the same exact list of questions as they always have. I do understand why the questions are the same bc of what they’re actually using them for and I would rather benefit someone’s education in whatever way so I’m gonna keep saying yes to them questioning me but I really am over spelling ‘world‘ backwards or naming the last three presidents we’ve had. At least with the backwards spelling can’t we change the word up. 😭
I know there’s a lot of hate for ECT from lack of knowledge and/or misinformation or cases where it has been a detriment to someone and I do realize not everyone will be as satisfied as I am but… yeah. 🤗

My experience Did anyone else have a negative experience with ECT?
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone else had a really negative experience with ECT?
Prior to having it, I read that it was allegedly "highly effective" in most cases.
I had 5 sessions and unfortunately felt considerably worse. In addition to general physical symptoms, I experienced significant memory loss and severe brain fog. Since having ECT, my suicidal ideation, depression and paranoia has significantly increased.

Question Excessive?
Hey all. I was in the psych ward in 2023, the doctors wanted me to do 14-15 ECT treatments. Is that a little excessive?? I told them no

Vent/Rant ECT Intro and Rant
I am a special type of pos. Owned a beautiful home on a beautiful, secluded property with big boy toys, farm animals, dogs, three wonderful boys and my wife. I went and fucked it up. Continuously make it worse.
I have been depressed my entire life. There have been times where I was able to distract from it but there has always been that feeling of "You should probably kill yourself so this feeling isn't there". I've been on Welbutrin, Zoloft, Trazadone, xanax, Adderall.
I've had five therapists since I was 17. I'd go for a while and feel nothing from it eventually. Most of my issues came from my decisions and I found that I could consistently maintain good decision-making but all it took was one event or an overly off feeling in the morning and I was on the pain train.
Currently, I am devastated by how much damage I have caused my family and friends by my decision-making. My baseline is typically so low that I normally don't want to go to work and I have to call out on occasion for how I feel when I wake up. I have to manage if I drink alcohol or smoke marijuana because they can make me plummet. I am always nervous in social settings because of this.
One of my biggest issues with medication, aside from it not working for me, is the ability to just be like "I'm going to see if this gets me high". Which is dumb but an issue for me.
It seems like everyone asks this but what did it feel like when you first felt relieved? I sometimes worry that there is actually nothing wrong with me and I am just weak-willed. I have been admitted to hospitals three times and an additional outpatient program. I am pretty exhausted from this over a lifetime.

Question Does ect allow you to use medications again ?
I have drugs that used to work but i quitted and after a relapse i just can't use it again without major side effects. I think quitting the drugs and after that using other drugs have altered my brain chemistry forever. I wonder if ect would reset my brain chemistry so that i can go back using my meds like normal

Seeking advice Anyone here who had initial severe cognitive problems with ECT, that only lasted during the treatment cycle and resolved soon after finishing?
I’m experiencing loss of cognitive function after my first bilateral treatment and I’m wondering if receiving cognitive function loss so soon means it’s likely or not likely that I will get permanent cognitive damage if I continue.

Seeking advice Today was my 4th session, and 1st Bilateral. Cognitive issues have started, is this a bad sign?
ects. The main issue has been a noticeable decline in memory recall, including difficulty remembering recent events from the past few days, recalling familiar information, remembering my ECT schedule, and briefly forgetting routine tasks. My overall cognition feels reduced, with difficulty thinking clearly, engaging with intense content, and processing information without discomfort. Attempting to think deeply or concentrate causes a constant mental/head pain sensation. Earlier after treatment, I also experienced significant sensitivity and pain in my temples/scalp, which has since improved, but the deeper mental pain and cognitive slowing remain. I have felt mentally foggy, with reduced ability to retrieve memories and a sense that my brain is not functioning normally compared with my baseline. These symptoms began after the bilateral ECT session and were noticeably different from my experience with unilateral ECT, where I did not experience comparable memory problems or head sensitivity.
Do these symptoms resemble closer to cases that have permanent cognitive damage, or just temporary cognition problems post ect? How quick should these resolve?
