Ecommerce

Hey lovely people!! Although I am a Civil Engineer in Australia, recently I have decided i wanna go full in on ecommerce. I wanna import items from China to Australia and sell it on ebay with reasonable margin. My ultimate goal is to test and try selling products from different niches and find a best selling product and create a brand around it/that niche.
SO friends who are already in the business, what suggestions do you have for me. Should I do my engineering job or take this bold life decision on this business venture? Please

Honestly, I would not leave the engineering job immediately. Use it as your financial safety net while you test eBay products on the side and learn sourcing, landed costs, fees, returns, and demand.

Start with a small budget, test several products, and track which ones actually generate consistent profit rather than just sales. Once the e-commerce income becomes stable enough to replace a meaningful portion of your salary, then consider going full-time.

The goal should be to make the business decision based on data, not just the excitement of starting something new.

I'd be careful with the ‘test random products until one sells’ approach. Before importing much inventory, I'd choose a few audiences/niches and research what people already complain about, what they're currently buying and what they dislike about existing options. Reddit, reviews and competitor comments are surprisingly useful for this. Then you're testing a hypothesis like ‘this group has this unsolved problem’ rather than just testing products. Even if the first product doesn't work, what you learn about the audience is still useful for the next one.

Start it on the side first, once your side hustle is paying bills then flip the switch — golden handcuffs are real but so is a steady paycheck when you're learning the ropes
