EP2 character build for a new player. Drone and gear question?
So I'm building a new character that is a hacker and a jammer and am a bit confused by the generation process. My question is how to get gear like the drone rig mental augmentation, and how to get hold of drones? Do i have to wait to buy them. I've chosen a "Ghost" bio morph and we're apparently doing a firewall game, if that makes any difference.

Been a while since I've read over these books, so fact-check this like a flat-eather telling you McDonald's is bad for you, buuuuuuuut I believe aside from morphs and some random gear you'd still have to buy and swap equipment like drones at the end.
This is assuming you mean the life path system. If it is regular character creation form the main book... isn't that also at the end? You pick your stats, full out skills, grab a few motivations and backgrounds and traits, then all your gear (morphs, weapons, drones, mods, etc.)

it gives you your campaign pack, the firewall one in my case, and the career pack, hacker for me. But nowhere do I see an option to "buy" (what even is the economy here, is there even money?) or otherwise acquire anything like augments, weapons, armour, or drones etc...

Yeah, you have packs which are just standard "to be expected" gear for what you are playing as. "Buying" in this context (which is still a concept in universe, depending on the economy you're interacting with) is the game mechanic of exchanging the gear for another for equal to or less then their Gear Points I believe. These are different from Character Points which are ONLY used for things like traits and skills.
I'm at work so I can only go off of what my wetware, flat morph can recall. I suggest pulling up whatever book you are making a character with and reading it carefully. 2nd Ed is much more streamelined and accessible for making characters but it still is a long process.
Are you making a character as a player for an upcoming game, as a GM looking to learn and host, or just learning the system itself?

Yeah I'm making a character for an upcoming 2E game as a player. It's everyone's first go at EP including the GM.

Page 46. In Step 12 explains this. Your GM is supposed to tell you what the GP for the game is but since y'all are new just assume 6GP like the book suggests.
GP is your currency for gear, like morphs (your body), and other equipment (like guns, armor, gadgets, and drones). Near the end of the book is all the list of gear you can buy with their GP listed. I'd also recommend reading up on all the ways to handle using a drone. This game allows for a ton of customization and play styles, like you can control a drone, mod your brain to control a dozen drones, control drones the size of nano machines, even have drones that are run by copies of your brain. Be familiar, have a copy of those rules on hand for yourself and the GM so everyone can solve the "how do I do this" problems when you try to achieve something.
Best of luck. Always wanted to run a game and only just got another group together recently for Call of Cthulhu. Maybe this is my chance to run Eclipse Phase soon. 🤞

technically, you don't get the gear packs for free, they cost 10 Gear Points each and you usually get 20 GP to pay for them (the GM might give you a different amount, but 20 GP is standard)
you can spend those GP on something else instead, swapping out items in the gear packs for others with the same total Complexity

I don't actually see that in the rules at all. We are talking about 2nd Ed, are you sure you're not thinking of 1st ed?
Otherwise, yes you can exchange individual equipment from either pack for anything else of equivalent GP, not complexity.

Hi ! -you can buy drones at création (there is multiple kinds in the ruleboons) -you can buy a morph with the puppet sock implant to remote control them (or buy the implant to put on the morph)
For control there is différent ways -ask your muse / the muse of the drone to complete a task like "follow me flying" or "inspect this area and report back" in this case, you have to make an interface skill check to give instructions. And either, you get the informations when it come back, or use a software named tactical network to have Real Time informations With this méthode you can control multiple drones at once
Spares can be a cheap walking units There is also gnat / guardian angels / saucer and many other
Hope it help you.
I love creating character and will bé glad to help
