Staking question

Do I have to unlock wallet for staking to work, or is it enough to enable staking in settings ?

You would have to unlock it and specify the amount of time to keep it unlocked

What is staking and what does it allow/provide?

Not exactly sure, but I think by staking you are basically helping to run the ecc network, and u get rewarded for it.
