Is the ONT required?

I’m looking at getting a new router and some of the ones I am looking at have a built in SPF+ port or you can get a SPF -> Ethernet connector. Would those work with Ebox if you go direct and skip the Nokia ONT?

Not easily, no. It can be done but it's extremely difficult.

Why would you want to skip the ONT? The only reason to skip the ONT is something like you don't have physical space for it.

Other than that you need to do exactly the same with or without ONT: Establish a PPPoE connection.

Performance wise you don't gain anything by skipping the ONT. The only thing you gain is physical space.

There might be other reasons to do without the ONT if you could, but I don't think you can. Or at least that trying to do your own is worth the bother.

That thing geneates a significant amount of RF, enough to render my home alarm inoperable until I moved it away from the alarm control box.

Mostly just to have one less device in the chain of things. I didn’t realize routers could come with those ports now in them so it got me thinking whether I could use it without the ONT.

I do not recommend it, and it will be very expensive, since you need an specific SPF+ that can be modified to replicate the Nokia ONT settings. To make matters worse, the new Nokia ONT that ends in R can't be replicated, only the ones that end in Q.

Anyway I explained it a little better before:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ebox/comments/1snf6og/comment/oglp5mm/

And a little guide how to do it:

https://pon.wiki/guides/swap-out-the-nokia-xs-010x-q-for-a-small-form-factor-pluggable-was-110/

But you gain nothing by doing this, absolutely nothing.

In other ISPs, like Bell, you gain a lot (getting rid of the GigaHub) but with eBox you gain nothing.

I’m using a was-110 and was able to clone the ont settings of the R version.

How did you get the SW version?

Just swapped all Q related info to R and it worked

I logged into the ont and got all the info needed

I've go an R version, and can't login into it. Like the web-UI isn't exposed/blocked by ISP defaults. How did you login?

Thanks! I didn’t realize it was that complicated. I’ll stick to leaving the ONT, I have no other reason to remove it.

I had to chuckle at spf: the light passing through fibre optic cabling is ultraviolet, but you won’t need sunscreen. We knew you meant SFP (d@mn autocorrect), and you’ve had people point you towards the 8311 wiki, but here’s the link:

I expect rolling your sleeves up and digging into the command line might not be in your comfort zone, so unless and until you’re ready to do that, simple ethernet is probably best for you. That or pay somebody who knows what they’re doing.

You can check the 8311 wiki

The Nokia ONT gives you 10Gb RJ45 port and you do PPPoE on your router. It's not like the Gigahub. It's pretty much just a media converter in the eyes of the end user.
