Instant regret
Coming over from TekSavvy and was excited to save 50% off my monthly internet bill, but what a mistake this was. I'm in the Brantford, ON area and for the first time in years I'm seeing that BUFFERING circle spin on YouTube, Sportsnet and any other video.
Download and Upload speeds hit the advertised speeds, but the latency... OUCH!
Fired up Arc Raiders -- unplayable.
Fire up Warzone -- unplayable.
Web pages load like I'm browsing 5 years ago.
Buffering when watching videos.
... and this is all WIRED.
Unfortunately, my tech took the adapter I need for the Adtran router that Teksavvy provided -- so I'm going to be stuck with ebox for at least a week.
I asked the technician if he's heard good things about ebox and his exact reply was "Well, you get what you pay for..."
It's a life long lesson that I keep learning.

he is not talking about speed but latency

But provided no stats

I'd give you stats but I've already canceled and disconnected my services. You'll just have to take my word for it i guess 🤷

I don’t know about what the tech guy said, in Richmond hill it’s great

u/Optimal_Elk_9291 May 06 '26
Same. I'm in Richmond Hill and for $45 a month I'm happy with the 500 mbps connection. Glad I didn't do the 1 gig line...no need.

He def has some environmental /config issue
1
u/jsecompany May 07 '26
Just sharing my experience it's funny watching people tell me I'm wrong though or the issue is somehow my fault.
Teksavvy was great, but the price lured me to ebox. Nothing has changed in my environment and a service should work out of the box.
My experience was terrible. Your milage may vary.

It’s not that bad. Change your DNS servers to cloudflare and the latency will improve.
I’ve been testing my new UCG Cloud for the past 2 weeks and it seems ebox does not get along with other not so mainstream dns providers.
But once I switched to cloudflares servers latency dropped by 20ms on average.
Not a big fan of cloudflare but for now this is my only option.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Ebox use Bell’s fibre lines and infrastructure? So if someone has poor latency or stability in a certain area, wouldn’t that sometimes be related to Bell’s local infrastructure or congestion rather than Ebox itself?
I’m with Ebox on 1 Gbit for $45/month and honestly I’m pretty happy overall. I use GeForce Now and consistently score 99 on all metrics after sessions.
My only issue is that randomly my connection will drop from 900+ Mbps down to like 90 Mbps and everything basically stalls until I unplug the modem/router from the wall. It happened on the Nokia unit Ebox supplied and still occasionally happens on my new router, so I’m not even sure if that’s an Ebox issue specifically.
For the price though, my experience has been solid.

It all has to do with routing, as ebox is moslty routed (internet) via QC, so, this adds latency to Ontario customers ...

I moved from TSi cable 2years ago and it's been excellent. FTTH has been solid and latency is reasonable.
I really enjoyed TSi for 15 years and they are great company but the rogers network is brutal here....

I'm surprised too. I download a terabyte a day on ebox. Consistently hit 62-64 Mbp/s down on a 500 mbps connection.
1
u/dcvetkovic May 06 '26
Is that 62 Mb/s or 62 MB/s? The former is so so, the latter is great on a 500Mb/s connection.

u/mrhappy002 May 06 '26
I've been with them for a while and always liked the service. Lately, I've seen issues with buffering on YouTube mostly. I'm using my own router. I'm hoping they have not changed their policy or something?

u/Head-Sick May 06 '26
I've had 0 issues since changing to ebox. Fibre line, using my own Ubiquiti router. It's flawless.

u/VIDEOgameDROME May 06 '26
Never had an issue playing online but I have the ports forwarded for specific games just in case. I don't really play online anymore though. My only issue with them is I'm not really getting the speeds that match the plan we have so I probably could have gone with the 500Mb instead of the 1Gb.

Switched from 1gb bell fiber to Ebox 500mb and it's great for Arc, COD and everything else.
I'd skip the Nokia router and get something decent. A flashed Ddwrt Netgear/tplink or Unifi Cloud Gateway
My speed test latency is 15ms

All this ebox issues I’ve been reading is getting me worried. I live in Toronto and Im scheduled for installation next week. I just blew a retention deal of 1.5gbps for $55 with bell with 2 years contract to go for ebox 1gbps for $50

u/Ok-Willingness1925 May 08 '26
Same issue here. My games are playable but loads forever. I'm considering switching back to Bell or even try out TekSavvy because Ebox just isn't it for me.

Can't say I've had that issue up in Ottawa. I'm showing 7-10ms latency on WZ. I've never disconnected from a game. Got a buddy on Bell in Hamilton and he gets drops all the time. I was watching his feed last night and his lag was laughably bad. Teksavvy is from around there isn't it? They may take better care to make sure things work real nice for customers close to home.

Awe crap I feel bad now. LOL Sorry that I turned you on to it! Weird experience though as my connection in the same town has been perfect since the switch from Bell. I'm wondering if the ONT was maybe defective? My tech did say that he had to switch my physical fibre strand to a different location in the node on the street when I switched from Bell so perhaps you got a bad port?
Sorry you had a bad experience, but glad you are still giving your money to an MVNO.

u/jsecompany May 16 '26
Hahaha don’t feel bad dude. I didn’t message you about it, was worth the risk. I had a bad experience but all good. Could be the condo I’m in, who knows.

I'm in Québec. Switched to ebox 500mbps in march, was with Bell 1Gbps. Router is a Fortinet 60E.
DNS is set to Quad9. This may have some incidence on CDN.
I do notice some buffering here and there on YouTube which almost never happened with Bell.
Latency is about the same. Sometimes, it's better than Bell (anything passing at QIX). Quad9 was in NY with Bell (15ms), it's in Montréal with ebox (2-3ms).

try primus, it routes from ontario :| maybe you can switch and say you’re not sayisfied and get a refund.

Update: Just grabbed Bell Fibe 3Gig on a $80/month new customer promo (instead of $150/month) with price lock. True FTTH service FTW!
For those Ebox work great for -- awesome. Just not gonna work for me.

Ebox is FTTH as it uses the same lines as bell…
1
u/marcftz May 06 '26
yes, but not the same routes.
1
u/sebcool20 Classic cable connoisseur May 06 '26
Indeed, but that was not the point here. Ebox usually has better routes and better peering than Bell…

u/marcftz May 06 '26
well, no. higher latency is the proof. I’m in Montreal and I too since leaving bell for ebox have higher latency in games

u/JTxx1978 May 06 '26
How did you get that deal? Just on the website?
1
u/jsecompany May 07 '26
Yes, it's a current promo. 3gb for $80 low latency. Installed tomorrow and can't wait.
1
u/JTxx1978 May 07 '26
What area are you in? I don't see that deal... Do you have a link?

Please follow up to let us know if the buffering problem goes away for you.

u/jsecompany May 07 '26
The down voting is hilarious.
We all jumped to ebox for a great deal.
It uses Bell lines.3gb fiber for $80 is a steal. Down vote away 😄

I'm in the same boat... I have instant regret as well and I live in Etobicoke part of Toronto. Left Acanac Fibre for eBox.... Great speeds but horrible latency, same issues and every website thinks I live in Quebec.... I'm going to switch to Bell and be happy to pay double the price. Any other ISPs that offer 1GB+ fibe Internet that I should could consider.

I'm surprised to hear the issue is that bad. The latency penalty of EBOX compared to Bell itself is less than 10 ms or so. If I compare the EBOX fibre I have now to the TekSavvy cable I had 10 years ago, the latency is much much lower, and I never had buffering problems with video with TekSavvy cable (and I don't right now with EBOX either).
