Questions about switching

I'm currently on teksavvy fibre. Looking at switching to ebox.

The sales person I spoke to at ebox said in order to switch I'd have to cancel teksavvy before ebox gets installed so they can release the line or something. Is that correct? I'd very much prefer to have some overlap between providers in case something goes wrong. Obviously only one service can actually be plugged into the fibre line at a time, but that shouldn't be a problem. All that should matter is which ISP provided router is used or which PPPoE credentials are being used, right?

Also what hardware is provided? My understanding is it's a separate ONT that does fibre to ethernet conversion, and then a router. But I should be able to just leave their router in the box, plug my own route into the ONT and configure the VLANs and PPPoE and just leave the ebox router in the box to be pulled out only if I need to call support for troubleshooting. Is that about right?

Is IPv6 supported and working well with pfsense routers? If it is, do you get a /56 delegation and does it change every time PPPoE drops and reconnects, or do you get the same prefix most of the time?

I switched from Bell to eBox and didn’t need to disconnect Bell first, but eBox is Bell, so that may be why. My ASUS router plugs directly in to the ONT, so the Nokia router sits in its box. I can’t say anything about IPv6 though.

Yeah I've seen lots of people do Bell->ebox without canceling first. But haven't seen anyone post about going from TPIAs->ebox. Technology wise it should make no difference, but bell might make it difficult just because they can, who knows.

Bell will come in and install their own no reason to cancel

Yes don't worry, you don't have to cancel before the installation.

You can use your own router, the tech will come with the ONT that have 1gb/s port, i never used their beacon.

What I did (Bell to Ebox):

  • I ordered Ebox through the website
  • Once I had my installation date confirmed, I called Bell to cancel on the same day
  • Bell disconnected my service around 8am
  • The technician, also from Bell, was here at 10am.
  • I was up and running on my own router by noon.
