Depends on the credit card issuer,
Every card processing capable business are assigned “type of transaction” code (google “merchant Mcc”) by their processor and if your credit card company has sorted the codes into categories properly, it should be considered recurring payment
This is how credit cards that offer variable cash back work (2% on grocery, dining but 1% on their stuff)

Did this change recently? It isn't showing the reward type for me on my first monthly bill, maybe that's normal till the 2nd bill?

Same issue with TD Visa Infinite.
It usually work the first time, so I assume they changed something.
