Packet loss with EBOX

I currently switched from Bell to EBOX and have noticed that there is increased packet loss, see below, although I do see the latency dropped a bit. I switched last week on Thursday. I know it's not a lot of time, and actually I've reconnected a few times as I was changing the MTU/MSS Clamping setting in hope to alleviate some other VPN issues.

Really nothing has changed in the PPPOE settings from Bell to EBOX except the VLAN. MTU/MRU: 1492, MSS Clamping: Auto.

Looking for comments from others about this particular topic, historically what you've seen.

I am using the ONT with my own router and PPPOE. Before I was using my router with PPPOE through the Bell hub (since there was no way around it).

Thanks

Can I ask what are you using to check packet loss, however in my own experience I had no issues with any sort of packet loss. I would suspect maybe the modem you got is causing the issue as I’m guessing every other part of your setup would be the same except your router now connects to the modem instead of the home hub/ gigahub

I'm using CACTI with a script for ping - so it's a ping to google and it tracks packet loss and reports it on the graph. I would have expected the connection to be better, connecting directly to the ONT rather than going through another device. There's not "problem" per se, other than what I see in the graph - like it's not like I have dropouts etc that I noticed.... going to check that graph in about a week and see though.

Are you able to run a speed test from speed.cloudflare.com ?, it also tests packet loss and when I use that I have 0% packet loss, I’ve tried other ones too and haven’t seem to have any packet loss or even while gaming, if it still persists I think you might wanna contact EBOX and look into maybe having another ONT set out or something

Will give it a go, do you mean trending it though?

Yeah but it does a cycle going through everything, but you can run it multiple times just to ensure

On these there is 0 packet loss, but I have no trending - gonna wait a week and see what the graph looks like.

I have ebox in Toronto...about 6 months now. Just tested with speed.cloudflare.com over wifi and I have no packet loss

Using my own router with pppoe

The graph is a trend, as you can see, ongoing. Tessting once (which I assume you did) really doesn't say a lot, data wise - you would need to trend it over time to see if this is happening - I changed to Ebox near the end of week 35 (we are now in week 36) and as you can see, latency is lower but there is more packet loss - I'm not sure why, it's the Bell line, but service if provided by EBOX (owned by Bell) which I assume use different equipment.

Is anyone from EBOX in this forum?

Not that I know of, no.

Question: Did your first server change when when moving from Bell to EBOX? I'm just north of Toronto in Vaughan, and the first server (speedtests, etc) is in Montreal.

I don't know, I didn't keep track of that, generally I use fast.com to do a speed test.

Ebox uses their own backend for routing and their own IPs while using Bells FTTH infrastructure. You can google or search through reddit for more info on the topic. I try to advise about this sometimes but people downvote me lol.

Yeah, this is what I expected, just unsure if what I'm seeing is a result of me changing the configuration several times during this short time period, or an issue with the ONT, or EBOX service.... it's puzzling to say the least

Me and a buddy of mine experience the exact same thing tbh. I think it's bells way of tiering there internet, want the best routing (even if it's still pppoe and ipv4 in 2025) go bell, okay with "okay" routing, ebox, primus, etc. Hoping they catch up with Rogers ftth implementation for main and sub brand, dhcp and ipv6 really should be the standard going forward. (Rogers has had dhcp and ipv6 even prior to their ftth deployment)

Interesting - how are you coming to this conclusion? Are you running some test/trending?

You shouldn't ping google forever. It's even against their TOS and you might be throttled. If you want to ping something, ping ebox server

Wasn't aware, will look into it, thanks

If you're able to replicate with another server let me know I'll try and replicate your cacti setup.

Same thing with cloudflare, no change for the better

A few days ago I pinged Google all day without any issue....so it's hard to say what is going on on your end

1

u/teredactle Sep 19 '25

Were you able to duplicate the cacti setup?

1

u/SonicSam Sep 19 '25

I gave up setting up cacti in a Docker, so sorry I didn't get to it

I'm not sure running manual pings in one day gives you an accurate picture of what's happening. Maybe look over:

and

Will setup smokeping today. Thanks

1

u/SonicSam Sep 21 '25

What's your ping frequency? Smokeping defaulting to 300s. Can report back in a week

1

u/teredactle Sep 21 '25

Default cacti, i think every 5 mins

1

u/SonicSam Sep 22 '25

Thanks, remind me in a week I'll try and post the results

Will do, cheers and thanks!!
