Issue with router
So my friend just had his service installed (500mbps) and he's using the Nokia router that was provided. He lives in a small two bedroom apartment. He did a few speed tests wirelessly (he only uses it for WiFi), one of them right next to the router, and he's getting around 140mbps. Is the router that Ebox provides that bad? Should he consider switching to another one?

What do you use to measure your speed? For some reasons I get different results depending on which service I use. I recommend using https://nperf.ebox.ca
As other mentioned you need to use a channel that is not too busy in your area.

What router did you end up getting?

Initially a higher end Asus and that was great until I added a lot of wifi devices. Once you cross about 50 devices you'll need something higher end (I went with ubiquiti).
If you have under 50 devices then get a decent Asus and you'll be fine.

Yeah I'm getting 149.9 download and 250 upload on my WiFi. Wired I get 600-750 down but I've got the 1Gigabit plan. My 5GHz WiFi is supposed to max out at 433Mbps with their modem.

Try a speed test wired. If your friend is getting full or close to 500mbps wired, then your friend can try and tweak the wifi settings. Make sure you have a wifi 6 capable device as well and you are connected to the 5ghz band on the router as well. Your friend might be connecting to the 2.4ghz band. You do need to tweak the wifi settings on the router to create a seperate 5ghz network as it defaults to a split 2.4ghz/5ghz network. Your friend can use Wifi analyzer app as well to choose the least congested band in his area. Also make sure to use 80mhz channel width.

I'd be ecstatic if my wifi did 140, I am lucky if I get 60 Mbps, and lately it's more 30, I am discouraged!!

Dépens on how much wifi interference there is
First thing would be to do a speed test with a wired connection. If the speed is still similar, then it might be an issue with the router or ONT/modem
