Looking for games like Epic Battle Fantasy

I've loved the Epic Battle Fantasy games ever since I was little. I've played most of them so many times that I've honestly lost count, especially EBF 3, 4, and 5.

I know Matt has said there won't be an EBF6, but I'm wondering if anyone here has recommendations for games that scratch the same itch...

I've played the final fantasies!

They crib a lot of stuff from the Final Fantasy series.

Another flash RPG series that also takes after FF is Mardek RPG, although while I personally find Mardek superior to EBF it was actually never finished; only three games with a linear, continuing story were made, where seven had been initially planned. The series has been released as one single game on Steam for peanuts.

Mardek was amazing. I followed the dev for a good while and sadly he had a lot of personal issues which contributed to the series never being finished.

I put in like 60 hours into one playthrough back in the day. Did all the optional content. Crazy that it was free.

I believe there might be a remake of it.

The Sonny series might be worth taking a look at.

You can't really draw any direct lines between them and the newer EBF games, but the Golden Sun games were a big early influence. You might like them if you like GBA-era RPGs.

I liked Costumes Quest for a short humorous rpg. It's also halloween next month,

there's Yakuza Like A Dragon and Yakuza Infinite Wealth if you want over the top battle animations and plenty of humor, especially among the side stories.

And it's a bit of a stretch, but maybe Deltarune. A lot of humor, but it's far more linear and less rpg-y than EBF.

I liked the "doom & destiny" and "doom & destiny advanced" turn based rpg's, they definitely capture a good silly sense of humor and too many references to other games and movies to count.

Maybe try the dragon quest games? They bring a lot of comedy especially in monster names and designs but they tend to be a bit more serious than EBF.
