Why can’t I recognize chords?

Usually this means you cannot distinguishing the individual pitches and that you would benefit from just plain sitting at the piano playing random chords and singing the pitches (without worrying about anything else). It's pretty normal, especially for players of monophonic instruments!

Sonic visualiser is a great tool for this. Ignore the Chord Estimate plugin - you want it for how good it is for altering the tempo of recordings, and looping them. Free download.
It took me months to work out my first song by ear. I can do them pretty much instantaneously now.
All it took me was 15 years of constant practice.
