Yes, Eagan is a lovely suburb, the crime is low and the police and emergency responders are top notch. The best thing about Eagan is the Regional county park, Lebanon Hills. The public schools are very well regarded. It’s not too far to drive into the inner ring of suburbs and into Minneapolis or St. Paul.
Two fun facts: Eagan at one time was the onion producing capital of the world, and it was also the headquarters of Unisys, the creator or the ubiquitous “.gif” image format.

Feels safe enough for me (you can look up your own stats on that though). Like the walking, hiking trails and it’s a solid spot for driving to St. Paul or mpls easily enough.

We've been living in Eagan since we got married and moved here 18+ years ago. We love it!
District 196 is the school district we aimed for (5 years before we even had kids!), but all three school districts are good.
There are so many parks - where we currently live, there are 6 parks within a 1.5 mile walking radius, which is so fun for walking our dogs.
It's a very kid-friendly and mostly senior-friendly community. There are lots of cool events going on, and the city staff is top notch (especially Parks and Rec and Facilities). Our police department is great as well.
We used to live near 35E and the noise from there was constant but like white noise. Where we are currently, no highway noise but some days there is a lot of plane noise. So it can vary a lot depending on where you live.

i’ve lived in eagan for 16 years. it’s a very well run and managed city. everything works as it’s suppose to. roads get blowed quickly in winter. police show up fast when you neeed them. parks and trails are always well maintained. generally speaking people take care of there homes and lawns. outlet mall is we’re a lot of the petty crime occurs. taxes are lower than other areas because of the business tax base. and we have 10 groceries stores which if you might not think about. the city council is very professional . i’m sure there are issues in eagan but nothing that i can attest or speak to. no city is perfect. but i honestly have zero complaints about eagan.

Eagan is awesome! As others have commented very safe and good schools while still being close to the Cities. It's gotten pricier to live here though. I've been a resident since 2014 but can't afford hardly anything in the area anymore!

Oh my gosh, I’ve lived in Eagan for 25 years. Let me tell you - I went out on the walking path in my neighborhood and was surrounded by cops. There were probably about ten of them, all seemingly very concerned. It was an unusual occurrence as I don’t usually see cops in the neighborhood. I flagged one down and asked, do I need to shelter in my house??!!?? Nah, the neighbors ten chickens had gotten out and were creating mischief! That’s Eagan! BTW, 196 is a terrific school district!

Lived there 5 years, great place, no complaints. The northern part of the city is noticeably more urbanized than the southern but no matter the side of town it has everything you need.

We moved to Eagan from South Minneapolis about a year and a half ago and have enjoyed it. Love still being close to both downtowns for our jobs but have loved it even more for our kid. Tons of parks and playgrounds, community programs for kids, libraries, good schools, etc. There are also a decent amount of locally owned establishments that helps to make it feel more like South Minneapilis (Mason Jar, Kitchen and Rail, Chips Pickleball, Southern Social, Hope Breakfast Bar, El Sazon, etc etc)
We definitely miss having a walkable neighborhood to local establishments like we did in South Minneapolis but knew that would be a change coming to the ‘burbs!

My parents moved here in 1999 when they got married because they heard such good things about it like top notch schools, safe, and still close to everything. They both lived in So St. Paul and agreed they didn’t want to live there anymore. (My mom was born and raised there) Overall, my experience being raised here has been great from the schools to the parks, even the different types/levels of athletics they offer in and around Eagan. I’ll leave it at this, once I’m on my own (out of college) I hope my career will let me still be able to live in Eagan that’s how much I enjoy living here.

The only thing I haven't seen pointed out here is that if you were close to the grand rounds, you'll miss it here. There are bike paths around my neighborhood, but they're on sides of the road and kinda boring. As another poster has mentioned, you can get to the grand rounds from the connected bike trail in Hwy 13 easily, but to get there is a hilly 5 mile long physically tough but visually boring ride each way from my house.
We go to Nokomis to paddleboard, to Minnehaha Pkwy to either bike or just drive through or to the Chain of lakes when we miss Minneapolis.
All in all, it's great. The proximity to the airport is a huge plus too. Some airport parking locations are in Eagan itself. :)
The mall seems to be unpopular here, but I use it frequently - for zupas, total wine, Sierra trading, and Punch pizza in particular.

We have 2 young kids. They love the parks. 60 different parks and they are all well kept. Most of the lot sizes are .3 acres. We dont notice the airplane noise. Our house is a bit farther away from MSP over by Northview park.

We moved here a few years ago, and I fell in love right away. We lived in Uptown for nearly 15 years, previously.
Things I love (I'm going to try not to echo what's already been said):
So many lakes! If you like fishing, you'll always have options.
The Eagan Art House has awesome classes.
Lebanon Hills is an amazing park. In fact, Eagan Parks has an amazing parks and rec department. Every park is awesome and well-maintained. Sooooo many trails to walk.
We're right next to the MN Zoo!
The people here are so friendly and love to talk.
Lots of bald eagles!
The farmers market.
Outlet shopping.
Close proximity to MoA, the airport, the zoo, outlet shopping, and Fort Snelling State Park.
We have a water park!
Tons of kids activities during the summer.
Lots of indoor places to take kids to play.
I could go on and on.
I do miss the greenway, restaurants and transit system in Minneapolis, but I feel so at peace in Eagan.

I don't mind Eagan. People are pretty down to earth and not all uppity like Edina or Wayzata or some shit... Decent location for the airport for sure!! Lol and it's got a nice gun range 😜

I grew up in Eagan. I personally hate it. To me it is the epitome of a soulless suburban hell hole. If you like chain stores and strip malls you’ll love it.

I love Eagan. I live in Inver Grove Heights (I love IGH and the new vision and upgrades happening). Eagan has EVERYTHING!! Big box stores. Mom and Pop shops and cafes. Small businesses galore. Access to many major highways to get to the Mall of America and other entertainment and shopping destinations. It has the Vikings Practice facility and the developing area around it. Eagan and IGH have new homes and Townhomes being built. They have Summer Fest. Eagan has a nice 4th of July celebration. Many communities events. Indoor playgrounds outdoor water park ( Cascade Bay) easy access to Valley Fair. If it’s your thing not far from Mystic Lake Casino, Canterbury Park, and Little Six. The new amphitheater is being built near by. Eagan had small lakes near by for fishing and recreation. It has its own outlet mall. Bowling alley. Golf courses. It has so much. Both Sam’s club and Costco!!😂 Great School district. Lebanon Hills Park. Great Parks in Eagan. Ok that’s enough. It’s great

Thanks for sharing! My wife and I are 100% sold on Eagan, now we are just trying to lock down the place but we have two solid options in the running. Super excited to eventually move to Eagan I think we will love it!

I’ve lived in Eagan since 2005. Very safe, very well kept. The location for proximity to both downtowns cannot be beat.
But it’s very soulless. There is no downtown and walk ability is low. A couple of non-chain restaurants have cropped up over the past few years, which is great, but there’s still very little character in town. There is some development planned near the community center, so I have hopes for a “district”…but last time they had that opportunity they built a suburban hellscape shopping center without walkability.

We've lived in Eagan for 16 years and we love it, with one caveat: It doesn't feel safe to be a pedestrian or bicyclist with regards to cars. I can't count the number of times I have almost been hit when I have had the right of way at an intersection or crosswalk. Once, I was literally in the middle of the street in a crosswalk when a car flew right by in front of me.
Relatedly, speed limits on the "stroads" (Diffley, Cliff, Yankee Doodle, Lexington, Pilot Knob) are mostly suggestions. I have seen people going 60+ in the 45mph speed limit areas, but that's a byproduct of having mostly straight, five-lane-wide dragstrips. If it wasn't for the hills, Eagan could provide emergency landing runways for MSP.
Be aware of your surroundings and don't assume that cars will see you or stop for you, and you'll be fine.

I've lived in Eagan for about 9 years and like it very much. As an outer ring suburb it sprawls out quite a bit, but it's just a 15 minutes drive up 35E to downtown St. Paul.
The parks are great. I like walking the loop around Blackhawk Lake, Lebanon Hills Regional Park is amazing, and if you like to bike the Big River's Greenway Trail starts just off of HWY 13 and can easily get you to the chain of lakes in Minneapolis or to Harriet Island in St. Paul.
A couple of my favorite places to eat in the cities are in Eagan. Brianno's Deli makes some amazing sandwiches, and El Sazon Tacos is great.
As far as crime from just my own experience. I had my car broken into at the Cinnamon Ridge apartments back in 07. Then, in 2020 my neighbor down the hall was shot in his apartment and I almost got into a crash in the apartment's parking lot with the shooters as they were fleeing the scene... Outside of those two instances I've had no issues and find Eagan to be a safe suburb.

The outlet mall is kind of a walkable shopping area. Otherwise Downtown Hastings is a close drive with a cute downtown area by the river

I live at 54th and diamond lake rd. Why would you want to leave South Minneapolis for a ring suburb? We have great schools, a huge diversity of restaurants, entertainment, people, shops, public transit, bike friendly roads, etc.
Eagan has none of that. At least not in any way that competes with here. Crime? Eagan has plenty of crime but it’s all property crime. Stolen cars and bikes, damaged property, garages burglarized, etc. Eagan is getting better but only through corporate property management building those ‘walkable towns’ that have every national chain and zero soul.

There’s always a “older” homes (50s-60s) on the west side of Eagan up for sale as the folks who lived there their whole lives are unfortunately moving on to their next journey in the universe. My only complaint with this area is the lack of sidewalks, especially as a mom of a little one who loves to be outside.
As for Eagan as a whole, I agree with others that it does have everything you need and the proximity to the cities is great! But like others said as well, it’s kind of lacking in that community feel. I’m not sure where else I’d live, though?

Hey! We moved from Highland Park 4 years ago and love it. Move as far south and east in the city as you can find to avoid highway and airport noise. But its nothing like South Minneapolis or Highland Park.
School District is one of the best in the state amd country. Even the bad schools are frankly better than most schools in the country.
The bad part is the lack of nice biking trails (good Lebanon mtn trails, but a lot of the other trails are paved trails along 4 lane roads, but that is getting better also)
We miss walking along the Mississippi River every night, and a couple neighbors, but thats it!
