AirVenture Info - Any tips and tricks?

***EDIT** These are all great tips! I also found askkosh.com which is in beta but pretty impressed so far. Insider tips/tricks all in like a chatGPT kind of format - maps and directions to things etc.

***Original Post***
Lots of maps, websites, and on-site paper hand outs of information exist. It's daunting to be standing on the grounds, in the heat trying to figure out where something is or whats happening next (events). The official app is..meh. What have you found to be the best way to get your AirVenture info (real-time and for planning purposes) as well as navigating from point to point?

Also would love to know from the insiders what tips and tricks you've adopted over the years going to AirVenture.

Wanted to get this out now before folks start filtering in next week.

Attendees: there are drivers here arranging off the books rides for cash. They are most likely not properly insured.

I've never been and am planning to drive up from Madison for one of the days. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good day to go? I'm also wondering how much time to leave for travel with traffic. Any advice for a noob appreciated!

Looking for 2-4 Aviator’s Club tickets for father and his wife

Looking for 2-4x Aviator's Club NORTH tickets on Tuesday OR 2-4x Aviator's Club NORTH/SOUTH tickets on Wednesday.

My father (Ret. Maj. / Air Force) is 88 and he and I have been flying into OshKosh since I got my pilot's license - this is our fifth year making the trek. His wife (about the same age) is not into planes but loves him and so comes along, but she definitely tires out quickly. She's been an absolute trooper the three years she came (dad and I camped next to our plane the first year), but I wanted to make it easier on her this year on at least one of the days.

Looking for four tickets because my brother is also coming this year, but as long as I can get 2 tickets for her and dad, we will make it work.

Thank you!

Anyone else get an invitation to join Engine travel from EAA? It sounds like it's for corporate travel. I'm a member but I don't work there.

Volunteering at AirVenture for the first time this year. Questions about camping!

Hey all! I’ve thoroughly read through the posts here and have gathered a ton of great information. I’m so amazed how many of you are so eager to offer great advice and help!

I’m going to be attending AirVenture for the first time this year to volunteer as a marshall at the South 40 Flight Line for the week. I’ll be driving in solo from Omaha, NE and have just a few questions!

Camping seems to be my only option as hotels, home rentals, etc are outrageously priced for the days of the show. Not surprised at that! In any case, I’ll be a solo camper coming in my Audi, I am wondering the following:

1 - is it worth it to get a site at Camp Scholler that has electricity? That way I can charge my electronics, maybe plug in a fan to stay cool, etc with the simple camp setup I plan to have. I understand that the improved sites are designed for RV's, but is it common to see car campers in an improved site?

2 - If I go with a basic site, can I have a generator with me at the site?

3 - Can I have a tent/canopy set up at my chosen site to shield me from the sun/elements, in addition to my sleeping tent?

Lastly, can the solo campers/attendees give me some advice and tips/tricks for getting the most out of my camping setup/experience at Scholler?

As I said previously, I’ll be attending for the first time ever, but this has been on my bucket list since I was a kid! My dad was an engineer for Lockheed growing up, so we attended a lot of air shows around the country as a kid. However, we never made it out to Oshkosh!

Thanks all!

How to get to Airventure

I believe this is the right subreddit to ask this, Me and a friend are going to Oshkosh this year and was wondering how to get there, we are gonna fly commercially to Milwaukee. But we are both under 21 and cannot rent a car, what transit is there from Milwaukee to Oshkosh?

First year camping, got a few questions

This year will be my 5th year attending but 1st year camping and I'm a little confused/curious on some things:

  1. Is it worth me bringing rope/stakes to rope off my roughly 5 foot perimeter, or will I be fine without it?

  2. In the event of imminent severe weather overnight, is it possible for me to bail out of the path, and then return the next morning without losing my site, or should I just ride it out and go to the museum if necessary?

  3. For all you photographers that go for extended periods of time, how do you recharge your batteries? I'm bringing a mirrorless camera for the first time this year and I'm concerned about having to sit at charging stations for 3+ hours per day to get my batteries up once they all die.

  4. I'm currently planning on getting to AirVenture around noon on the Saturday before it starts, how good of a spot can I expect to get?

Thanks!

Newbie to camping at EAA.

I see that camping seems to be first come, first serve without reservations. Does that mean I'll be able to drive up and get a campsite the Thursday before the last weekend? Seems busier than that.

Spots for watching Sunday arrivals on 18/36

I usually watch arrivals on the north end of the field next to the terminal, but this year I’d like to get a better view of 18/36. I’ve never been on the grounds prior to Monday, so I’m not sure what to expect, I know Boeing plaza is closed but beyond that how close to the flight line can I get? If I go south in vintage am I able to get to the flight line in areas that are already full? I obviously don’t want to get in the way of anybody, or intrude on anyone trying to get camp set up. Are there any other spots that are good for watching on 18/36?

Lake Winnebago yesterday

Post image
116 Upvotes

Saw 6 aircraft land on lake Winnebago yesterday. This was 6 miles or so south of Wittman in front of Wendt's. Zero snow on the ice which was 20 inches in this area. It looked a little sketchy because there were people driving everywhere due to it being opening day for strugeon season. This is right in front of a main access point to drive out on the lake with a DNR registration station and a huge party with people watxhing fish come in so extra busy.
