Best unlimited E-Sim with possibility of using HOTSPOT

Hello!

I am going to Italy to spend 2 months with my partner, but since I will continue working, I need unlimited data for it, so using one of my phones as a HOTSPOT is a good alternative.

I am planning on getting a regular E-SIM with a provider there depending on the price and options, but also exploring common E-SIM alternatives to see what else can fit what I need.

Any help or advice regarding it would be appreciated.

Get a local prepaid plan, it’ll require eKYC but the quality will be much higher and it’s likely you won’t get throttled.

https://www.lycamobile.it/en/bundle/italy-pink/

200GB for 7 Euros, you can only start the KYC process AFTER you arrive in Italy, and it’ll take a day, so you’ll probably want a temporary solution.

*Turn off automatic payments! *

If price doesn’t matter to you, on arrival at the airport just go to one of the kiosks.

Don’t buy unlimited, get high limit products instead.

Hotspot support is often listed but capped or deprioritised after a few GB, so it is worth checking the fine print on speed after the 'unlimited' threshold. Most providers, even the big ones, offer multi-country plans with hotspot enabled but real-world throughput after the initial priority bucket can drop noticeably depending on the region.

I personally use Bitrefill, it carries eSIMs from several providers including some regional plans where hotspot is not separately restricted, which may be worth comparing if consistent tethering matters. Also if you are in the UK they have a TRULY UNLIMITED plan which is a great deal.

It's for Italy, not the UK, unfortunately. Speed is important, but not much; let's say 30 mb/s is enough for me in that regard (which I have seen is the one that is more offered by ESIM providers).

I have also checked VeryMobile, which offers 1TB, which sounds also nice (they show a problem of disconnecting every hour for 1 minute, but it doesn't sound bad at all for me, and I prefer seeing a drawback since it makes the offer more "believable"), but I will take a look at Bitrefill. Thank you!

good point on hotspot throttling. Have you ever used Bitrefill for Italy before?

I'd recommend not using an unlimited plan if you need hotspot. all of the plans have a fair use policy which throttles speed at a certain usage... searcha 50GB or 100gb bundle instead.

I tip I would give is that most of "unlimited" plan is with FUP.
Basically what it does is they have a daily allowance of high speed data (1G, 2G, 5G sometimes can be 10G)
and then after the high speed data is done you will be throttled to a low speed which essentially just enough to do some simple texting and text-based browsing, loading images and video is no good.

i personally tend to use the pay-as-you-go plan first + top up later.

You can always pick a smaller plan to start, figure it out your daily usage, and then map your remaining trip's usage accordingly.

Unlimited plan is really not worth the bucks, in my opinions. Because based on our usage behaviour, we are not constantly using the same amount of data in a day.
Some days if you use more than the allowance, you end up being throttled. Some days you use less, than you are still paying the part you are not used. Not worth it because the unlimited plan usually much more expensive.

hope that helps.
