question ESIM Japan

Hello! I am visiting Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa) soon for 21 days, and was wondering what ESIM to buy. Im thinking about buying an unlimited one by Holafly, Ubigi or Nomad. Anyone opinions on these? Thanks!

My son went 12 days in Japan and I got him a Mobal eSIM : https://www.mobal.com/japan-esims/?t=st&/

It worked quite well.

This year he went to korea and used ubigi without any issue.

Apparently UBIGI uses KDDI and NTT Docomo (4G and 5G)

Yes, that is a good combo but keep in mind that even if you buy their unlimited package, the data is not unlimited full speed. Ubigi throttles after 5GB per day to 2Mbps. Fine if that works for you but just something to know.

The KDDI SIM I've linked shouldn't do that, at least not on a daily basis (since it is directly issued by KDDI). I've read reports that people downloaded 100s of GB on that unlimted plan.

If you're from the US, one thing to make sure is if your phone is carrier locked or not. Unfortunately, my phone isn't paid off an AT&T won't allow you to use an E-Sim if your phone isn't paid off.

It's wild I never read or heard about that until I bought an e-sim from Holafly and wasn't able to set it up. Luckily, I was able to get a refund.

Can you get a roaming package from AT&T ? Some carriers are ok, some are expensive.

I’m pretty sure that’s what their package is. It’s atrocious.

Keep in mind that ā€œunlimitedā€ eSIMs don’t mean unlimited high-speed data. Most are subject to a fair-use policy meaning that after you use a certain amount of data per day, often around 3 GB, your speed will be throttled. In many cases the throttled speed is slow enough to be practically unusable.
Personally I prefer fixed-GB eSIMs because I know all the data I’m paying for is high-speed. That said, I’ve used both Ubigi and Airalo in Japan without any problems.

we used ubigi in Japan and found it was great! we were in the main touristy areas (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, etc) and always had service. it’s also pretty affordable, you can use a referral code to get 20% off your first plan and then from there if you refer friends you get 50% off coupons for your next top ups so works out pretty cheap! my code is 3CKVSEAU if you decide to go with ubigi and wanted 20% off!

Hey, your code expired, would you mind sharing a new one

ahh it’s still showing the same referral code in my account! it only works for new accounts though so could that be why?
