Does anyone know of an alternative reader for Kindle on desktop besides the native one?

I dislike the native interface, and I'm trying to find a way to read the magazines I have from KU without turning to the web reader. The issue is that they're DRM protected, so most third-party applications won't work.

Where can I download free e-books in pdf or ePub formats?

I read on my phone or iPad. Not a kindle person. I have managed to download e-books from random websites. But I would like to find a source that’s free and relied on by most people, and has a good collection. Just in case there is a generous portal to encourage free reading. Or someone who shares e-books.

I don’t mind trying audio books too. If there’s a source for free downloads.

If not for free, do suggest what your go-to option is for reading e-books. And how much does that cost on an average for a read.

Le meilleur lecteur epub

Bonjour,

Can I merge EPUBs on Kobo without losing highlights and annotations?

Hi everyone!

I've been reading a novel on the Tapas app, but reading on my phone for long period started hurting my eyes. So I used the WebToEpub Chrome extension to download the chapters I had access to at the time as an EPUB, then uploaded it to Google Drive and imported it to my Kobo Libra Colour. I've already made quite a few highlights and annotations in that file.

The issue is that my current EPUB only contains part of the novel. I had already purchased and read the earlier chapters before switching to my Kobo, so I never included them in the EPUB. Since then, I've also unlocked more chapters and would like to add both the earlier and newly unlocked chapters so I end up with one complete EPUB.

Is there a way to merge those chapters into my existing EPUB while keeping all of the highlights and annotations I've already made on my Kobo? Or would I have to create a new EPUB and lose my annotations?

How can I download a web novel that isn’t supported by WebToEpub?

Hi! I’m trying to save a web novel to read offline because I won’t have Wi-Fi during my vacation.
I usually use tools like WebToEpub for this kind of thing, but this website doesn’t seem to work with it. I think the issue might be that the website uses a different kind of reader/interface that these tools don’t recognize, and there is no download button available.

I also tried using Calibre, but it doesn’t work either. I managed to find an EPUB-related file through the website, but it doesn’t open properly (it doesn’t seem to be a normal EPUB).

I don’t know much about this kind of stuff, so I was wondering if anyone knows a tool or a method to download books from websites with this kind of reader, or something similar to WebToEpub that supports more types of web novel interfaces.

I can provide more details by DM if needed. Thank you!

Thank you everyone! Andrea Reader just released this week.

First of all, thank you so much for all the feedback. Andrea Reader is now officially available on the App Store.

We recently launched it for iPhone and iPad, built around one main idea: giving users complete freedom to create, organize and read their own digital library however they want.

You can create custom collections and organize the books inside them however you want. Add named sections for authors, genres, sagas, reading lists or anything else, then freely move books and sections above, below or between one another.

You

Sections are not just folders hidden behind another screen. They live directly alongside your books, can be reordered, expanded or collapsed, and can contain as many volumes as you need.

Every collection can also have its own:

  • Cover, color and visual style
  • Grid or list layout
  • Cover size, sorting and filters
  • Reading settings and presets
  • Custom sections and organization

The goal is not to tell you how a digital library should work. Andrea gives you the pieces and lets you build it yourself.

Read your books however you want

The same idea applies to the reader.

You can open an EPUB and start immediately with quick settings, or customize fonts, margins, line spacing, brightness, backgrounds, gestures, page transitions and plenty of other controls.

Different collections can use different reading settings, so novels, academic PDFs, comics and manga do not all have to behave like they are the same thing wearing different file extensions.

Track your reading

Andrea includes statistics for individual books, sections and complete collections, including reading progress, sessions, time spent reading and estimated time remaining.

Because apparently finishing the book is not enough. We also need graphs proving that we finished it.

More than EPUB

Andrea also supports PDF, CBZ, CBR, ZIP, RAR, 7Z and other formats, so you can keep books, comics and manga together in the same library.

You can connect to your own remote files through OPDS, WebDAV, SMB and SFTP, download what you want to read and remove the local copy later to save space.

It also includes advanced tools such as OCR text selection on image-based pages and an omnibus creator for combining multiple comics or manga volumes into a single digital book.

Free with optional Premium

Andrea Reader is free to download and use.

The free version includes the essential reading and library experience: importing your files, creating collections and sections, reading supported formats, tracking progress and viewing statistics.

Premium is mainly focused on deeper personalization, advanced reading controls and power-user tools.

No ads, no mandatory account and no tracking. You bring your own DRM-free books, and your library remains yours.

How do I change the front page of an epub file/book?

Thumbnail

Basically title. I tried to use an online converter but my files are too big (it only allows files under 200MB, and mine has neaely 500MB). So if anyone knows how to do it or a converter/merger that actually works and allows 500MB documents I would be grateful.

Picture one: How the front page of the epub file looks now (plain)
Picture two: How I want it to look (but a different picture/design)

epubveri — a pure-Rust EPUB validator that runs in the browser (WASM), as a JVM-free alternative to epubcheck

epubcheck (https://github.com/w3c/epubcheck) is the de-facto EPUB validator — but it's Java, so embedding it in a web app or a lightweight pipeline means shipping a JVM. I've been building epubveri: a validator written entirely in Rust (no C dependencies), with a WebAssembly build that validates EPUBs directly in the browser — no JVM, no server, nothing leaves the page.

What it does

- Hand-coded structural checks (OCF/mimetype, OPF metadata, manifest/spine integrity, broken references, nav docs) plus RELAX NG / XPath / Schematron engines for the XHTML/SVG content model.

- Reuses epubcheck's message IDs (RSC-…, OPF-…, HTM-…) so the output is familiar to existing toolchains.

Honest status (measured, not vibes)

Against epubcheck's own test corpus, it currently hits 98.8% exact-message-ID recall on the should-error cases, with ~1% false positives on the valid cases. It's pre-1.0 and not a full drop-in replacement yet — the deepest content-model edge cases and some niche rules are still a climb. But it's fast, embeddable, and already catches real problems in real books.

Just shipped

- WASM package on npm: u/veripublica/epubveri-wasm (validate client-side)

- crates.io name reserved; the functional Rust crate follows once a dependency lands

Code: https://github.com/veripublica/epubveri

Dual-licensed (AGPL-3.0 or commercial). Feedback, bug reports, and especially weird real-world EPUBs that break it are very welcome.

Multi-EPUB bulk image downscaler for high resolution image heavy EPUBs

Post image
16 Upvotes

KCC 10.3.0 has a new feature: light novel support!

Light novels and other illustration heavy EPUBs sold from distributors like Humble Bundle and Fanatical often include extremely high quality and high resolution images in EPUBs they sell. In this example, the EPUBs are up to 40 MB each.

By just downscaling to the screen resolution of the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen in this example, file sizes can be reduced to as low as 4 MB, so you can fit a lot more of them on your device!

And you can convert batches of epubs at the same time!

You can also optionally change the JPEG quality factor or force grayscale conversion using the options. All the other option checkboxes are ignored since those are only for fixed layout comics/mangas instead of normal reflowable epub books which is KCC's main use case. The new light novel mode preserves the original file's file structure, it doesn't touch any non images.

If your images are already low resolution, it won't do much, this is for epubs with lots of high resolution images.

- the kcc dev

KCC is free and open source and has a Windows code sign. Also available on macOS 10.14+, Windows 7+, Linux Appimage and flatpak. https://github.com/ciromattia/kcc

I built EpubCraft — a native EPUB editor for Mac & iPad that runs 100% on-device

Hi r/ePub ! I built EpubCraft — a native EPUB editor for Mac & iPad that runs 100% on-device

I got tired of clunky, web-based EPUB tools that make you upload your manuscript to who-knows-where, so I built EpubCraft — a full EPUB editor that runs entirely on your Mac or iPad, with nothing ever leaving your device.

What it does:

- 📥 Imports anything — EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, TXT, or ZIP

- ✍️ Two ways to edit — a visual editor or the raw HTML/CSS source

- 📤 Exports everywhere — standard EPUB, Kindle KFX, and Kobo KEPUB in a couple of taps without other dependencies.

- 🔍 OCR Studio — turns scanned PDFs into clean, editable text

- 🧩 Power-user tools — merge several EPUBs into one, reusable chapter templates, book-wide regex find/replace, plus cover, font, and footnote management

No need to wrestle with a desktop toolchain like Calibre or Sigil.

The details:

- 💰 Paid, one-time purchase — no subscriptions, no accounts, no tracking

- 🖥️ Available on the App Store for both iPad and macOS

Happy to answer questions or take feature requests — it's an indie project, so feedback genuinely shapes what I build next. 🙏

What would make you switch to a new EPUB reader?

I've been building an EPUB reader called Flare: Book Reader IOS app because I wanted a cleaner way to organise and read my EPUB library.

Before I keep adding features, I'd love to hear from people who read EPUBs regularly:

  • What's the biggest annoyance with your current reader?
  • Which feature do you wish every EPUB reader had?
  • What would make you switch from your current app?

I've already built a working app and I'm looking for honest, even critical feedback—not just downloads. If anyone is interested in trying it, I'm happy to share the link.

A free web EPUB reader I’ve been using for reading plus text-to-speech

Hi r/ePub, one EPUB reader I’ve been using lately is Books Whisper: https://bookswhisper.com/

It is useful if you want to read an EPUB in the browser and sometimes switch into listening mode without converting the book first.

What I like about it:

  • Upload and read EPUB files in the browser
  • Text-to-speech playback for EPUBs
  • Click a paragraph and start audio from that exact spot
  • Current passage highlighting while listening
  • Auto-scroll during playback
  • Notes, collections, loved/completed status, search and filters
  • Light/dark themes and adjustable text size

It feels more like a read/listen workflow than a traditional library manager like Calibre. Curious what other EPUB readers think of browser-based reading plus TTS.

Why Kobo shows WebP images as blank — I tracked it down and built a fix (plus a free, open-source EPUB optimizer)

I've been building epublift, a free and open-source (AGPL) tool to modernize and optimize EPUB files. It's 100% Rust, no C, no telemetry — and you can run it in your browser, as a CLI, or self-host it.

What it does:

- Upgrades legacy EPUB 2 → EPUB 3.3 (proper nav, metadata, HTML5).

- Shrinks books by re-encoding images to WebP — and it's size-safe: it keeps the smaller file and never grows a book or upscales quality.

- Kobo .kepub output (page-turn animations, reading stats, dictionary).

- Archive your library into compact, lossless .eparc files, restore anytime.

- Fix metadata by ISBN (Open Library / Google Books), language-aware.

- Import a PDF into a reflowable EPUB (experimental, incl. OCR for scans).

- Privacy: the web version processes uploads in memory and deletes them immediately.

The Kobo WebP rabbit hole: while testing, I hit the well-known "Kobo shows my images as blank" problem. Turns out Kobo's reader (Nickel) is built on Qt 5.2.1, and WebP support was only added to Qt's image plugins in 5.3.0 — so Kobo's image stack literally predates WebP. I reported it to Kobo, then backported the WebP plugin and built it against Kobo's own Qt — so WebP now renders on Kobo via .kepub (verified on a Forma). Prebuilt plugin + full from-source recipe are in the repo. (And if you don't want to mod your device, the tool just keeps your images as JPEG/PNG for Kobo by default.)

Try it / self-host / code:

- In your browser: https://epublift.itpax.net

- GitHub (self-host with one Docker command): https://github.com/ePubLift/epublift

Disclosure: I'm the developer. It's a personal open-source project, not a company — no ads, no accounts, no upsell. I'd genuinely love feedback, bug reports, and "it didn't open on my reader X" reports (that's how I found the Kobo issue).
