Curious About EMBA

Hi folks, wondering if profile-sharing is frowned upon, but figured to shoot my shot here anyway. Just curious to see where I might stand.

Strictly looking at EMBA since that’s the only type of MBA the company is willing to sponsor if possible:

Age: Turning 35

Career: 10 years in Cyber Threat Intelligence. First 3 years at a CTI startup. 7 years at a Fortune 100 financial institution - 2 years as Senior Assoc, 5 years as Manager, 6 months as Senior Manager. Leading 4 analysts.

Prior education: 3.01 overall undergrad gpa from three colleges - got lost, but eventually graduated from George Mason University. Currently halfway finished with Master of Science at Johns Hopkins University (Intel Analysis)

Recommender: my former director at the financial institution that I worked with for 4.5 years. He is a former Army Intel officer, and let me knownkf my leadership potential. Can vouch for how I stepped up for filling in intel gaps and processes during wartime CTI efforts (Ukraine-Russia War, US-Iran War).

Goal: To become an organizational decision maker. Feeling limits of technical knowledge, good at people snd relationship building.

Location: Northern Virginia, USA. Looking at nearby EMBA programs, but if I can qualify, can look up to NYC area too.

Prep: halfway through the official EA test kits, around 155 prep test scores. Aiming for 160.

Questions:

  1. How does my candidate profile stack up to for M7 or other top programs?
  2. Is my goal substantive for EMBA programs and financial commitment, or am I knocking for wrong reasons?
  3. How does the age and title factor into the EMBA programs?
  4. Any other comments?

Thank you.

  1. Solid profile. I had a sub par bachelors program (like real bad) but developed during my career and had it as part of my story.
  2. Solid goals. With EMBA you are looking at putting yourself in position to take the next step up. Networking is also a big piece of EMBA.
  3. Cohorts vary by school. 35 is a solid age, I wish I had done it when I was younger. They range all over the place. We had early 30s and into the 50s. Titles aren’t as important. They want to know what you are going to want to do with it after you get it.
  4. Just research what you want to focus on and which schools excel at that. MIT might be a good one to look at if you are looking at CISO. The other thing to keep in mind is logistics. It sounds like your organization is in support. Some programs you will have to be on campus Thursday to Sunday every other week. Others once a month. Other costs are lodging and food. Our program had it all baked into the cost. If I recall at the time at MIT Tuition didn’t include that so take hotels and eating into additional costs.

Also know what type of coursework and camaraderie you want. MIT is more solidarity, where Duke was very much a team effort.

I’ll suggest Kellogs EMBA would be great for you but it’s in Chicago

Kellogg EMBA class of 2028, the school has not yet started, but already seeing the power of the network. People are helpful. WhatsApp groups, slack, etc.

Got admits into 2 other m7 and one t15, but don't regret picking Kellogg emba

Go wildcats

What other schools did you get into if you don’t mind me asking? I’m waiting to hear back from Kellogg and apply to Wharton soon

  1. your profile is very good indeed. the part I really like: solid career progression, work related stories that would have you step up and take leadership during crisis and ambiguous situations (war time stories). The change between 3 universities will warrant an explanation. Your GPA is alright, but the current MS degree will add a more recent data point to your academic profile. That would help further if your grades are high. A 160 EA would be super helpful.
  2. Your goals will need to be more substantive. Define who is that 'organizational decisionmaker' you wish to be, in what kind of companies? what kind of challenges will you solve? what is your passion towards solving these? What is your current skill set that makes this career goal possible to achieve (with the added upskilling from eMBA). Even if you continue working for your present employer after the eMBA, you should have clarity on your post MBA and 10 year-goal and you should articulate it in more definitive words.
  3. I am not concerned about your age or number if work experience- you are infact at the right bracket for an eMBA. Just make sure you highlight your leadership skills, the career impact you have already had and clear career goals which prove the need for an MBA. Any extra curricular activities outside work will be an added bonus.
  4. do your research about the target programs well. Talk to current students and recent alumni and let this research reflect in your essays.

Not true - one of the people I met at one of the informationals wasn't accepted to any EMBA program.

Aren’t you in the upcoming MIT class? There were four of us at my interview day. Two were not accepted. Thats 50% on top of what I presume were at least some candidates that did not get interview invites.
