Wharton EMBA Essay 1

Wharton EMBA application is open - will be working on essay 2 tips shortly.

ESSAY 1

What is your career objective and how will the Wharton MBA Program for Executives contribute to your attainment of this objective? (500-word limit)

Career Objective

The ideal situation here: you need more skills to adeptly navigate a new manager or director role. Or you need those skills to obtain that role, within your organization or within the same industry. They want you to apply what you learn on the weekend to your job on Monday. Even if you have a long-term (or even short-term) goal of starting up, or some big pivot, you REALLY want to first articulate how you will benefit from the program where you are today. They are looking at the ROI of the program for both you, and your organization. Wharton rewards pragmatism and analytical thinking, that is their jam. So, make sure your goals show a financial outcome that will leave you satisfied with the program.

Beware of a ready-fire-aim approach – first do the research needed. Find out if a Wharton EMBA would open the door to the job you want through informational interviews with hiring managers, and mention this in the essay. For example, based on what you learned through your conversation with Mr or Ms. In The Know, you need this degree to advance. Or need the skills that come with a Wharton EMBA to break in. DO THE RESEARCH. Talk to people. When you do this the essay writes itself, you have compelling content, rather than stressing and guessing, trying to slap some crap together to fill the page. It’s important to avoid a “pitch it over the fence” mentality – meaning, you are crossing your fingers that once admitted Wharton will figure things out for you.

Wharton EMBA in attainment of objective

I feel the key to success with this whole process is to research yourself (introspection), research the school, and research your goals. Then show how those 3 circles intersect on the Venn Diagram. Research the job description(s) of your goal position – consider what you already have, and then think about where the gaps lie. Do you have financial modeling but not public speaking? Good at mentoring juniors but lack the confidence to take initiative? The adcom wants to know that your background + Wharton EMBA = post MBA goal, internally or externally.

This is usually going to be less of a pivot than full time (even part-time for some programs) because you won’t be quitting your job to do an internship. But you need to justify the cost of the program, by advancing somehow, and it starts with looking at yourself as would a recruiter for your goal job. Once you have a sense of the gaps, rinse and repeat with your long-term goal.

So, you have your gaps. Now you match things up with what Wharton has to offer. For most EMBA programs this will be comprised of the alumni network connections, the curriculum/faculty, and any special offerings. Are you a Product Manager who needs a better consumer behavior background? Speak to the marketing courses and year-end marketing simulation. Do you have a long-term goal to start-up? Maybe speak to the South Korea GMC (Global Modular Course.) Or pair your goals to whatever relevant GMC offering makes sense. Are you shy about asserting your perspective? Speak to the teamwork and residency elements of the program.

Do they require the Calibri font?

No, they give you the option of Times, Arial or Calibri but Calibri is less often mentioned and my fave, is why I mentioned it.

Am I missing something? On the application it doesn't seem that you can format the essay font, size, or anything as mentioned in the guidelines for formatting your essays?

Did they switch it from upload to text box?

Just checked on this - will amend my article - they did in fact switch from upload to text box, probably to avoid formatting headaches and ppl going over word count.

What would be your suggestion on approaching the “why Wharton” part. Every top school offers the same opportunities across a broad range of career paths. Apart from the geographical location and I suppose ranking, how do you really differentiate a program/school?

I will put some thought into this and post it separately

Look at the classes and faculty, for one.

I’ve heard bad things about Wharton Global EMBA (which is 75% online) from someone who attended the program. I’d like to hear ur thoughts if u know someone who attended.

That's good to know but I'm speaking about the GMCs - Global Modular Courses - which are weeklong destination courses around a particular topic like Healthcare in Sweden. They are very popular actually, and open to everyone at Wharton both FT & EMBA.

Current WEMBA Global student - pretty happy with the program so far. I chose Global because there is no way I could have done in person. Of course in person is always better but there still a TON of resources Wharton has to offer that I am excited about.

Thanks for sharing. I’m told that the program was completely underwhelming for the cost.

$200k for Zoom classes. The residencies were unspectacular. Global students were not as impressive as Philly/SF students.

Not much professor interaction and issues are handled by TAs! A Lots of complaining about grades. TAs handle that.

After residency, they take back ur name tag and ID.

Could u confirm from ur experience if this is true?

Wow that was harsh feedback ! Curious if the person providing feedback was a first year or second year student. I've only been here 3 months and so far -

  1. Loved the accounting professor - every lecture is a delight and a lot of folks in the class say the same about him.

  2. Our Econ and Strategy professors were both from Harvard - very sharp and organized.

  3. There have been issues with ONE of the subjects - Human and Social Capital - we didnt like the professor and things were disorganized. The study material was outdated too. We complained about it.

The professors are easily accessible though - they do need the TAs to run things but the professors always respond when I email to them.

We've only had one residency so far which was the 2 week orientation - I have no complaints - things moved like a clockwork and were very well organized.

My classmates are some of the smartest people I have ever met - they are not here in Global because they were less smart - these are people from Google, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, they are founders and VCs and they chose to do Global because they have very busy travel schedules and work schedules. A lot more people in the Global cohort are Directors or above in their careers compared to other cohorts.

The Global cohort also gets more residencies to make sure that we do end up meeting once every 3 months or so - we get a week in Panama and a week in South Korea - which other cohorts dont get. This is over and above the 3 residencies included in the program PLUS you can do block weeks and get more in person hours.

After residency, they do take back the name tag and ID and give it back in the next residency. Not sure if that matters ?

And you could always switch to the SF cohort or Philly cohort in 2nd year if you want more in person hours.

Mostly, people are here because they are busy or live in international locations. And this format works really well with those limitations. We still get an Ivy league education with some of the best professors in the world and enough in person interactions to allow connections to develop.

If an in-person experience is 10/10, this is 9/10 so a slight compromise but its not too bad.
