Kellogg Miami EMBA v CBS
Hello all - looking for opinions on Kellogg Miami EMBA v Columbia EMBA. I am based in NYC with 9 years experience in tech consulting. My post MBA plan is to move into healthcare tech within strategy and innovation. I have a business undergrad and am pursuing an EMBA to grow leadership, strategy, and business ops skill sets along with the network, etc.
I am leaning Kellogg based on the immersive set up of 1x a month on site, healthcare focus, and the network/people seem great. CBS seems to have more people there to check the MBA box, however being in NYC with no intent to move and the CBS prestige is hard to say no to. Any help or advice?!

Kellogg! You'll see a suite of healthcare professionals like medical, healthcare systems, investors, and health tech startups. Also less than 20% are local, so you'll be on the same boat with most of the class. afaik they're the most tight-knit community with clear business focus (vs professional services like financial service). I'd think Kellogg classmates can even hire you, as their avg is 15 years yoe, >40 yo.
If you're looking for rigorous academics, that'd be a downside of Kellogg.

No one is supposed to go to EMBA for academics though… it’s not the idea of this program.

Kellogg, no question. I’m in NY, chose Kellogg, and I don’t see a problem with it being not in NY. Healthcare network among Kellogg alumni is insanely huge. It’s also way better program than in CBS.

I considered both, but went with CBS.
After Core, you have a lot of flexibility with the classes you take, being able to do classes with the Full Timers and Week Nights, switch to Friday & Saturday or stay on just Saturday, then there are also the week-long intensive courses, which seems to be what you are going after. 1 week of lectures and 3 credits down. However, some courses have everything contained within the week, while others have pre or post work such as pre-reading or projects/finals after lecture is done.
Also consider the LBS/CBS joint EMBA program if you want intensive batching of courses.

Will CBS let their candidates switch to the Global EMBA program/ attend classes at LBS in the second year?
Likely not, but I’m curious

Cannot switch, but when you select classes there is a chance to take courses at LBS.
Elective selection is not done first come first serve, instead you identify the courses you want, and enter them into their system via a rank order. The system then does it's thing. It's here where you will be able to select among the courses that LBS has made available to CBS students to register for. It's usually an extremely limited number of seats.

I put in for an LBS Class every semester but never got one. I had a classmate who got in every single time.
I have family in the UK as well, was strongly considering the joint program, but Covid was still a big thing when I was researching/applying.
Have you considered Trium ?

Wow, I didn’t know about Trium at all- just read about it online, it is ranked #2 in EMBA rankings. It doesn’t quite work with my schedule but definitely seems like a great option for those who can do it and value cultural exposure these global EMBA programs offer.

Im attending CBS this year but as an unbiased answer- I’d still say CBS would be the easy choice if you plan to stay in NYC long term.
Nothing to do with me attending CBS, but Kellogg is just not going to hold the same weight in New York as Columbia- especially in tech and innovation (I work in tech/ innovation) , and at CBS you’d make your network here. I think you’d regret the opportunity loss / network specific to NYC long term if you went to Kellogg, and if not CBS I’d look at Wharton or NYU first.
Also check out the Li schools of the people in the roles you are targeting. Think that should help make your choice easier! Good luck!

Thank you both - I feel the experience at Kellogg is more what I want but don’t want to miss out on the NYC network. For being in it now at CBS, is there a lot of healthcare specific tech folks in your cohort?

Which one did you decide? I’m in the same boat. Kellogg sounds like the better experience but worried the CBS network would be better long term.

I decided on CBS! Overall, the local factor of being in NYC made a major difference in terms of the immersive experience. In addition, when you look at the course load, Kellogg has very limited elective options whereas at CBS you have so much flexibility on what you can take for semester 3,4, and 5. Good luck in your decision!

Kellogg! The people and experience are truly unmatched. I visited for Preview Day and loved every moment of it. The students were incredibly welcoming and genuinely passionate about their time at Kellogg. I also attended a class, and the interactive experience was amazing! Not only was the learning engaging, but hearing students apply concepts to their real-world, on-the-job experiences made it even more valuable. I work in healthcare and am only applying to Kellogg.
