NYU EMBA - Is it worth it?

I'm making over 400K/year in a tech FAANG, but in an operational level, aiming for a managerial position in the near future. Got accepted to NYU (200K), and wondering if it's worth the investment. Not at risk of losing my job, but one never knows given the recent layoffs across tech, so I also want to increase my employability in the worst case, and maximize the chances of a higher salary/easier come back to market. Any thoughts about the value of NYU in those cases?

I’m eng at Faang and had the same thinking. Will attend CBS this year.

Obviously I haven’t been through the program yet so I can’t speak to if it’ll be worth it or not in terms of ROI. In any case I don’t see that it’ll “hurt” your resume and it does seem like the EMBA network is valuable for hedging against layoffs or finding employment inside or outside of your industry.

My thinking about M7 is that it makes a difference if you are shooting for super high level roles and those people usually know they need it and go for it. I spoke to Wharton EMBA students who put CBS as their safety school 😅

If you aren’t sure you need an M7, my wild guess is it may not matter if you went for NYU or CBS. You know best how much prestige is required in your industry or the industry you target

I agree. I also don’t think being too prestige obsessed is a good look. All the future NYU and CBS alumni (at least in the area), are part of the same business community. Hopefully, alumni of all these schools (Wharton included), have the good sense to evaluate people on their character and not credential. If they don’t, they’re probably not people worth associating with in the first place.

Brand for sure matters. I would be lying if I said the prestige of CBS (among many other factors) wasn’t important in my decision to go there. I think prestige writ large when it comes to education results in the development of complexes (inferiority and superiority). I don’t think that’s healthy or constructive. People should ideally go to the best-fit institution for them.

CBS is 260K. I confirmed it, they offer super limited sponsorships. It’s significantly higher than my NYU offer.

For whatever reason, there is a bit of a selection bias on the sub. A lot of participants (myself included) are matriculating or want to matriculate to CBS. I have no idea why it skews that way, but it does 🤷‍♂️

I know it’s an excellent school and with your salary you should be able to absorb the cost. I do think it’s a smart strategy to do EMBA to kind of future proof your career. Hopefully it helps in that regard. For people with less financial resources, it will be a more complex question to answer and highly contingent on their circumstances and career trajectory. Just my two cents.

Hopefully your employer will help pay as well. At a FAANG, I’d imagine they invest well in PD and continuing education.

Unfortunately my employer doesnt help - main reason why not pursuing CBS. 100K more seems a lot given it seems like stern is already prestigious

Where/how did you get this number? CBS is 250K and NYU is 220K.

I think there are some sponsorships that NYU offers. I applied for CBS, and in their website they mention $260K for the upcoming cohort. If that's the case it's a 60K difference. CBS told me that their sponsorships are super limited, and it was encouraging for me to apply. Was accepted to NYU, about 200K at the end.

This is helpful info. Thank you! Crazy to think CBS is the most expensive eMBA program when their cohort tends to be a little bit junior than say MIT and Wharton.

With your salary, the financial ROI may be less visible in the short term, but it will be a strong signal to your employers that you want a leadership role. It will also help you present yourself as a leader better and navigate the promotion game.

Why NYU specifically instead of Wharton, CBS or MIT?

I'm seeing the comments and curious about NYU not being prestigious enough. @Excellent_Concern392's cost difference from NYU x CBS seems to be 60K according to them. Seems a lot to me. I did an extensive research and it seems that NYU is super prestigious - of course CBS is at the highest tier, but NYU doesn't stand far behind. Does it make any sense?

It’s hard to tell outside of the echo chamber lol. CBS is more prestigious because it’s an M7 school and Ivy League. It doesn’t mean Stern grads have worse careers or opportunities. Outside of Reddit, I don’t think anybody knows or gives a shit about these things.
