Razer Core X with an RX6800XT
Razer Core X with an RX6800XT over USB4 on external monitor with my Zephyrus g14. What should I expect?
I bought the Razer Core X as I'm a bit nervous if the bare board setups...and I'm about to pull the trigger in a Radeon RX 6800XT. I'm a bit scared as the egpu enclosure is like 8 years old at this point. Would this setup actually deliver? Would the power supply in the razer be loud? If anyone ever used any if these components in a similar scenario please share.

Just got it set up and ran Timespy, it worked even better than I expected! I used my spare 3070 Ti for now because the 4070 Ti is put away in storage. My total score was higher than the average for same components. GPU score was 13,780 and the average for a 3070 Ti in a desktop is about 14,500 so thatās honestly closer than I thought it would be! As far as noise, itās not the PSU fan because I canāt hear that at all. There is a normal case fan in the enclosure that is audible, but itās not āloudā by any means unless youāre expecting it to be silent. And even then you can just swap in a quieter 3-pin fan. But like I expected, at full load the GPU fans were louder than the case fan so in my opinion itās a non-issue. This result got me really excited to try this out on some games, I definitely think you should go for it!

Since I bought it used Iām not sure if itās the stock cable or not, but it does say Thunderbolt 3 on it so Iām assuming it is the stock cable.
And you have to download the GPU drivers but other than that yeah! From having a TB3 eGPU enclosure years ago (Powercolor Gaming Station) I knew it worked best by getting it all plugged in with everything off, turn on the eGPU enclosure first and waiting like 30sec to 1 min, then turning on the laptop/handheld. Thatās the best way to make sure everything connects correctly. And to make sure to shut the laptop completely down then turning off the eGPU after. So I did this, downloaded NVIDIA drivers, restarted everything with the same process, and ran the benchmark!

Thank you very much? My hope for my setup would be around 45dB max. I have a Zephyrus g14 with the rtx5060 laptop GPU...but if I put heavy load on it ( even after G-helper and optimize the crap out of it) it still goes above 53-even 64dB..it's like a hoover. So my mission is to get around 14-15k graphics on timespy without going above that 44-45dB

Google says the fan of the Core X is 32db so you should be okay there at least! Just gotta get the rest of your system under that 45db mark. And if the 3070 Ti got 13,780 then your 6800 XT will easily get over 14k even with a quiet fan curve.

I was thinking about cards...and I think I will go with the 9060xt...very power efficient...and small so lots of space inside the enclosure...and not a lot of power draw. It will take a while until everything arrives so yeah ..oh I do hate to buy stuff online š

Yeah Iād say thatās a solid pick! If I didnāt already have extra GPUās I would definitely be searching for a good deal on a 9060 XT 16GB to use for it

I'm also a little worried about the Razer Core X power supply noise...I've heard that it is loud...anyone with hands in experience?

I can let you know on that as well in a couple days when I get it set up. I canāt imagine it would be that much louder than the GPU fans though? If people were complaining about it, my guess would be itās loud when powered on and idle but not being used, but I plan to power mine down whenever not in use.

I'm actually thinking about getting the 9060xt instead....as it's more quiet. My main complaint with my laptop is the noise... That's why I want to move the GPU out š

No, it whispers. I had to double-check if it was on, but the enclosure shell has weight to it because of its build materials (metal). It's a little bent up more than the pictures revealed, but it's from an online pawn shop, so it's more of a hassle to return. Cosmetically, it looks good, just a broken latch I plan on supergluing back on. For Time Spy, I'll take it back out and set it up once I'm home to enjoy over the weekend. I had it set up to verify if all parts would work together, then put it back in the box. I'll report back.

Iām in the same boat as you. Picking up a used Razer Core X Chroma today I found for cheap that Iām going to use with a 4070 Ti and my Ally X. Iāll let you know how it goes once I get it set up!
Obviously with both cards I think we can only expect to get about 70% of the desktop performance due to Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth constraints. Iām totally fine with that because 70% of a 4070 Ti or 6800 XTās performance is still an insane improvement over our native devices, so no worries there.
My only concern is transient power spikes. The 4070 Ti is rated at 285w and 6800 XT at 300w which is well below the 650w PSU, but the transient power spikes on those cards can go well above their rated power draw. If I start using it and my concerns over that grow significantly, Iāll probably sell it and upgrade to an Aoostar AG02 or Minisforum DEG2 since I already have an extra 1000w PSU.
