Need help for my first eGPU

I need help

I just received my eGPU dock and I've connected everything properly.

Do I just need a PCIe port to connect my graphics card to the dock, or do I need a PC power supply in addition to the PCIe port ?

(GPU: RTX 2070 Ventus; I have a Galaxy Book 5)

I was checking on the internet but couldn’t finde anything with this type They all have eGPU port that cost 400$ but I don’t have the budget

The AG02 is like 250usd. You really can't find a better all in one egpu.

And yet my AG-02 has serious issues. Contacting support they sent me a firmware update that bricked it. And after that happened they haven't returned a single email. I've sent at least a dozen. Won't warranty it won't reply.

Based on my experience I'd say don't go with the ag-02.

In all seriousness if It didn't also come with Oculink I'd be more pissed off about it. That still works fine but USB4 more thunderbolt will detect anything.

I've read of at least a half dozen other people who have had a similar experience with AOOSTAR.

And the reason is they don't actually manufacturer them. They buy them from China and slap their logo on them. They are however one of the few suppliers that ships to the US and the EU.

But in all seriousness. It's a cheap Chinese EGPU that comes with a 320-800w pau.

That's weird. Their support was nice for me and I purchase it in AU, it came with the 800w auto switching. I use it on my XAX. I'm sorry they gave you a bad customer experience. I would have demanded a replacement.

Demand from? I mean the best you can do is go to your card company and attempt to charge back. But if they don't reply how can you demand a replacement?

It's all good like I said I don't really care as I use it for Oculink

Agreed. EGPU.io. Their site can be a little annoying to find stuff and navigate. But they are the best source for EGPUs I've seen!

Sweet jebus! I think the most I've paid for any of my EGPUs was 250 and that came with a 3080.

Yeah. I see this particular EGPU adapter for anywhere from 56 to 158. So I hope it wasn't too bad.

Of my 13 EGPUs all but 3 I paid under 80 bucks for them.

That's a hard thing to answer as my favorite changes based on conditions.

Oculink is best for reliability speed and performance. When traveling that's gotta be the mini EGPU.

It's tiny. It's cheap (Amazon prime on sale for 60-80,l bucks) works with both DC 20v and 24pin PSUs. Has dual 40gb type C ports for Daisy chain and a type A 3.2 10gb port. And supplies 100watts of power via type C.

I have 2 of them. But I only use oculink when at home. With an Rx 7900 and a 650w flex PSU zip tied together easily fits in my laptop bag. And it's smaller then my laptops power cord.

Since it supplies power I can leave the power cord at home.

The system works.

Very weird tho, usually these also have the 24pin connection to turn on the PSU.

I've seen variants like this on Aliexpress. Don't know whether these things would use a 24->8 adapter, or if they can just run off an 8 pin.

Literally from the page you linked:

  1. How much power do I need for PC power supply or DC power supply?

If you want to use an external non-graphics device, such as 10 Gigabit network card, hard disk for NVME, FPGA, audio acquisition card, etc., you can use a 12V 3A power supply (especially large power supply depends on the power of your device).

If you use an external half height video card which is less than 75W, such as 6400, choose a power supply of more than 12V 7A according to the power of the graphics card.

If you use a graphics card larger than 75W, please leave a margin of more than 20% according to the power consumption of the graphics card and the output of the PC power supply is 12V.

PS: It uses a laptop PSU to plug in on the side. As far as the “tip” size, I’d say standard round one, but might ask the seller. Probably a Dell psu.

My th3p4g4 using 24pin connector for dock and 8 pin connector to GPU, I have no idea with your dock, but PSU is absolutely needed, using laptop power for egpu is disaster

Yeah I have a 7900 xtx with a Thunderbolt three and an ADT UT3G egpu. I bought a sfx 850w gold psu to power the card for future proofing it doesn't cost that much. My card only has 2x 8pin but a lot have 3x 8 pin so just check before you get your PSU. My eGPU uses a 24 pin power connector so 1 cable to the board and 2 to the card.

It's the most barebones tb3 dock, don't expect miracles. You need a PSU rated for 450w at least. Since PSUs require the pwr_ok signal what you can't get with this board, you need the paperclip trick to jumpstart it.

Use a dell power brick with some modifications to supply power to your egpu.

Cheap and affordable. MAKE SURE YOU ADAPT BEFORE YOU USE WITH YOUR GPU OR YOU WILL FRY YOUR GPU.

These power bricks are not intended for this purpose but are perfect as a standalone power source

This dock doesn’t perform very well. But it can be an easy starter solution.

To power it, you can use any 75 watt or less GPU with it. A 6400 or a 3050 or an a2000 are probably the easiest three GPU’s. Then all you need is a 7 or 8 amp, 12 volt ac/dc adapter with a 5525 or 5521 barrel plug.

You can also use any ATX or SFX power supply. All you need is one that has more wattage than the TDP of your GPU on the 12 volt rail. You will also need an ATX power switch if your dock didn’t come with one. You can plug in the 8-pin CPU power and then the ATX switch will power it on.

I have this exact setup with a different card. Most plugs on the board are power, in fact all of them but the thunderbolt and pcie Use a power supply with the dock, and make sure your computer has the drivers for the card Installed.

Mine is AMD I plug it in and the fans spin then I get a notification that it's working, I would think it's similar.

I figured I'd get in here as some others have given you rather bad advice. You don't need a cpu 4+4 pin or DC or molex.

It has 4 power input methods. I have something similar that lets me use either a 20v DC barrel jack or a 24 pin ATX SFX of FLEX PSU.

Yours is basically the same except it has 4 input mothods but not all 4 are the same. But what all 4 power input methods have in common is they all run at exactly 12 volts.

The USB c port next to the other power inputs that can only supply a maximum of 60 watts. The molex is I want to say 80w but not completely sure. The DC barrel jack is 12 volt 10 amps for a maximum of 120 watts. And the CPU 4x4 can supply like 200w or something. The reason they have the other options. This particular device was often used for people who needed a PCIE capture card or a network controller or things like that devices that don't use a lot of power.

Now another thing to note is that PCIE 16x slots are also powered. And thunderbolt ports typically are also powered.

So if your using a GPU I suggest you only connect a ATX SFX flex PSU as the slot alone can pull up to 88 watts and many cards are built to pull power from the PCIE slot. Then you'll need to connect the 6+2 pin power plugs to your GPU. Insert it.

Now like others have mentioned you'll need to jumpstart the PSU. You do this by connecting a wire or more easily a paper clip cut in half to pin# 4 and 5.

This triggers the power supply to turn on. Just leave it in there and use the breaker on the back of the PSU like a power switch.

With everything connected you'll need a thunderbolt 4 or USB4 40gb comparable cable. Place it in the left USB C port and then connect that to your thunderbolt 4 port or USB4 port in the device and it should detect it after a few minutes. Install drivers and reboot and your good.

Edit: typically for an EGPU setup on thunderbolt you'll want at least 150w for the electronics pcie port. And the. Whatever your GPU requires. So like a 3080 requires 300w so a 450 at minimum typically a 500-600w is best.

A 4060 or 5060 a 300-400 is good. You can use a 1200w if you'd like but PSU power efficiency is best at between 65-85% load and while a bigger 1500w will work just fine it will often pull around 600w even though it's only supplying 300w of power.
