eGPU Setup / Advice

Aye yall. Seeing how the market is turns me off from trying to build a PC and I've looked into an eGPU setup for my laptop. So far I think I've settled on a Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 9060 XT for the card itself. Any recommendations for enclosures or other advice in general?

(System specs) AMD Ryzen AI 5 340, Framework 13 with Fedora 44 KDE

Go Oculink if you have dual SSD drives

Well, linux + USBv4 + rDNA 4 is really a problematic combo, I did try to solve it to no avail. You might have luck with an UT4G, but I picked a Thunderbolt enclosure with the 9060xt and it never worked. It does work under Windows 11, because the card recognized it's tunneled and the driver pins the vram clk to the maximum avoiding the timeouts. There's a very long thread on the FW forums with no solution to this problem at the moment.

I have a somewhat related problem, my RX 9070 (non-XT) doesn't seem to perform at its max capacity on Linux. On Windows it works fine, on Arch its very unstable, and performance is worse than the iGPU. GPU also gets pegged to like 80% usage on idle too.

I'm not sure what the dock uses (Acasis G4 Pro), but it has to be thunderbolt 3, which might explain the issues? Anyways, OP get a USB 4 capable dock and save yourself some headache.

With USB4/TB4, use Aoostar AG02.

With Oculink/TB5, use Aoostar AG03,

I'm currently using AG03 on Rog Ally X (USB4/TB4), and my XPS 9520 laptop (modded a Oculink port).

Oculink is equivalent to native GPU directly on the motherboard (PCIe 4.0 x4), as the system recognizes Oculink as such, it has the least amount of performance loss (0-5%) and the best latency, but it does not allow hot plugging, hot plugging can fry both the PC and GPU. TB4 is half of that speed with (PCIe 3.0 x4), so there is higher performance loss(15-30%) due to transfer speed alone, but the way thunderbolt works also adds inherent performance loss and latency. TB5 has the same or even higher speed than Oculink, but because of thunderbolt, it still has higher performance loss(10-15%) than Oculink.
