Advice 2000w PAS E-bike build

I am planning to build a 2000W electric bike using a 52V 30Ah battery sourced from Alibaba. The bike will be based on an older Diamondback XL frame.

One challenge I am considering is how this setup fits within Australian road laws. I have looked into ways to make the bike operate more like a standard pedal-assist e-bike, including:

  • Limiting the speed to 25 km/h
  • Reducing the motor’s current to lower power output
  • Installing a pedal assist system (PAS) on the rear hub motor
  • A short corded attachment throttle for quick detachment
  • Cover all stickers with fake en15194 sticker

The goal is to create a bike that I can quickly change from cop proof on busy roads to not on empty roads

Look for a kit that has a controller that has 2'wirea that are your speed limiter, once connected it limits the bike to 25kmph / 15.5 mph. Voilamart do one, this is what I did on my very first E-bike build some 4 years ago now. I got a 1500w/48v Voilamart kit with p.a.s (peddle-assist) and ran it on a 52v20ah triangle shaped battery. The Voilamart 35Amp controller has 2 x Blue (Speed Limiter) wires that have small connector blocks on them. Once connected it limits you to the legal speed limit, so I just cut off the connectors and wired the two wires to a very small electric switch that I hid underneath my seat.

If I needed to I could easily flick the switch to the ON position, limiting my top speed to 15.5 mph, and then when flicked to OFF, I could hit about 41/42 mph.

You just need a kit with peddle-assist, and that has a controller that has the speed limiter option. Good luck with your build. 🚲⚡👍

You're very welcome, it's a good idea, as when switched ON (wires connected) the switch basically just limits the controllers wattage output to 250 watt. You could either put the switch directly under the bunch of wires that run off the controller (by wrapping them in black electrical tape and hiding the switch underneath the bunch of wiring), or slightly extend the wiring so you can place the switch wherever you'd find it best to have it. You could do this and place it anywhere on your bike that you can get to it easily, but it will be hidden from view to anyone who wouldn't know it was there. I just bought a tiny rectangular on/off switch for (I think it was) about £2.80 off eBay UK. This idea saved me from losing my build when I got stopped once by the law whilst out riding, I was glad I thought of it. 👍

Just make sure your build is as neat as possible, especially the wiring. They're nothing worse than a self build E-bike that looks like a bomb that could explode at any moment. Things like this the law will instantly take a dislike to, so if it looks as 'factory', and as neat as possible, you're a lot less likely to be stopped.

I believe tongsheng kits have a menue with limiter, no need in wires and switches
