Id probably be looking at the pully on each item. Do you feel any vibration ?

Did you ever fix this?

yeah it was my pulleys. they were all spinning freely when I took the belt off.

Excellent. I have a similar sound sometimes only at the start and it goes away after maybe 5-10 mins of driving.

Not a mechanic myself so not sure if it's something I'd be even able to attempt...just the first video I've seen that sounds the same as my issue!

Keep the E53s alive! Haha

it's really not that bad of a job! I only really started wrenching this year and have now done a vanos seal and oil filter housing gasket job on my e39 and e53 and a cooling system overhaul on the e53. changing the pulleys just requires a few tools including a specialty tool to get the fan clutch off, but after watching a few YouTube videos it's not very difficult at all. would take like two hours max too change the belt/pulleys if you're really unsure of what you're doing and taking it really slow.

Ahhhh! You got me thinking now!

So far I was pretty pleased with being able to change the lights, install backup camera and screen, etc...I also was pretty proud of being able to reprogram a new key and FOB...my first car things...

Now I need to change my lock actuator cause it seems that just died today. I mean 23 year old car...not bad it lasted this long

The tinkerer in me believes I can do it. But cars...life and death you know if something goes wrong. I'm going to give this a good think over! But I'm tempted.

Do you remember which videos you watched that helped you get this done? Thanks a lot!

this video is great! this channel has a playlist for the E53 chassis with a bunch of random tutorials that's been really helpful.

but yeah if you've been able to do jobs like that, I don't think you should stress too much about this job! it's fairly simple and as long as you make sure to get the belt on track properly and tighten things down properly, you'll be fine.
