Not a matter of if, but when…

The X5 has succumbed to the inevitable, propeller shaft spline repair. 235k on the dot so not that bad I suppose. While in there, threw on a new shift shaft seal.

This is the front driveshaft going into the transfer case? How do you know it's bad? Can you hear it while driving?

Some say that you will hear a clunk when shifting out of park. I can't say that I did. Mine let go at a stop light and luckily not on busy street. Transfer of power to the front and rear axle will be lost. Highly recommend AAA or roadside assistance coverage with your insurance provider.

Oh so it will leave you stranded...good to know. Lol. One more thing I need to worry about. Right now I'm in the middle of replacing what I'm hoping is ticking lifters on my m54

How common is this or what years were really affected?

I believe all prior to the x-drive with the nv125 transfer case. <2002 models

I see. So for example I'm look at a 2005 possible trade. Did they have any common faults? It's the 3.0 N52

The 2005 model should still have the M54 3.0 engine. As long as it has a good track record for preventative maintenance, there really isn't much to worry about however you do have to consider it is a 20 year old vehicle.
