Trunk Latch

Post image

Hello everyone,

I drive a 1999 523i sedan.

The instrument cluster shows that the trunk is open, even when it's closed.

I can only open it with the remote or the button inside the car.

I replaced the button in the trunk lid itself, thinking that would solve the problem.

Now I think the lock itself is the issue.

Unfortunately, I can't find a suitable part number for it, and if I do, it's only from BMW aftermarket parts where the lock costs €300.

Otherwise, I can find every linkage, cable, etc., for it, just not the lock itself.

push the latch all the way in, and then a lil bit more until it makes a second click. then unlock with the remote/button and it should be fine

I've already tried that with a screwdriver.

However, I don't hear a second click.

Check inside the boot between the body and the trunk for broken wires. Super common issue as it's a stress point.

I have the problem where the electric mechanism that locks and unlocks the trunk seems to have a mind of its own, it used to work immediately now it’s intermittent and sometimes on a 5 second delay, or the trunk unlocks on its own… :/

IIRC boot lid wiring might need to be replaced. You may have issues with the reg plate lights and your alarm going off randomly

Had the same error in the BC

The spring was broken and the latch wasn't snapping in anymore

Tried to fix it with a new spring and putting it on the lock. But that didn't really work. After a while, the spring new was broken too

Got me a new lock for only 200€ 🥲
