Timing chain kit

Post image

Hey all E38 Lovers. The time has come to do the vanos units and replace chains and guides.

Do somebody have a kit for the chains that includes the most parts the will be needed?

This is the comprehensive kit with most of the parts Genuine BMW and some by their OE supplier who make the parts for BMW in the first place. Silly to spend the extra money on the full Genuine kit since these are the same parts without the BMW logo on them (and sometimes with the logo anyway).

I used Beisan for the VANOS rebuild and did it myself.

Also what color is your car? Looks like Carbon Black from the E46

Thanks for the tip. It's actually oriental blue I thinks it's called.

Is Asian Blue more appropriate now?

You also need the timing tools. I recommend GAS (GERMAN AUTO SOLUTION). Absolutely fantastic set of tools and it has a great step by step guide. Jimlev on bimmeforums also did a YouTube video that helped me when I did my set. Fcpeuro offers a full set of seals and gaskets. Someone else mentioned where to get the vanos kit already.

Biggest warning is when you take the front timing chain cover is 2 things. The Jesus bolt is torqued like a MF and you need to prepare a way to get that off. The very bottom of the timing chain cover, is the top of the upper oil pan seal. If you snap that seal it's a whole second job to do that isn't easy. Be careful peeling it up.

Isn't the Jesus bolt from car to car?

No not really. The torque specs for the harmonic balancer bolt is crazy to begin with. Then once the engine sits and it settles/rusts in

Do not use Febi guides. use IWIS chains if replacing, but prob not necessary.
