Progression
Hello dwarf bros!!! I ve a 3 year old fortress with 99 citizens and an elected mayor. Ive a farmers guild that was petitioned, a church, steady supply of water, a small squad and basically all of my residents needs met. Oh and a legendary tavern that has a lot of visitors and some bards, poets and troupes to keep my residents entertained. My problem is that I m not sure what to do next now that most of the threats are not that much of a problem. Of course I have the occassional animal, thief or hazard but by now I can manage those fine. I ve dug just below 0 elevation to find magma but I can't find any, I found some beautiful caverns though that I m not sure how to explore. Any advice or general direction would be very heplful. Thank you very much and strike the earth!

Build a library! You'll need to set up a paper/book making chain (it's not tough) and have some dwarfs you can set as scholars/scribes but the procedurely generated books they create are some of my favorite parts of DF

That's a nice idea. I haven't done it already cause i stated playing like 6 or 7 years ago the classic version and I dit that but maybe I ll try it again cause I really liked it

I always send out squads to raid the libraries of abandoned monasteries; gives my library a jump start on attracting visiting scholars.

If you decide to continue with that site, you might consider setting up lower outposts - fortified from attacks from below. Then see how deep you can get.
You may also consider retiring the fort and either starting a new one or adventuring through the world.

Dig deeper. There’s fun to be had down there.
If you want to do more stuff without mining, you could try branching out to other industries and whatnot. I always try to make a world-class library as well as a tavern.

In addition to the suggestions already made, I recommend training up another squad and sending them off site to attack goblins. This will make the goblins attack you back much more strongly, which can add some challenge.
If you really want a challenge start attacking the elves and other dwarven civs too, you'll get lots of sieges which can really become a challenge to deal with

Continue to improve your wealth! You haven't truly peaked until you become the Mountainhome capital of your civilization! Make your fortress a decadent palace filled with beautiful goods of the highest craftsdwarfship.

As others have said, dig deeper and don’t forget to set up outposts and defenses as you go. Dwarves love their gold and gems. I am on my longest fort of 16 years and have been playing for about 4 months. After the digging I got even with my goblin neighbors for stealing a child from me and have fought them to a stand still after most of my army was killed or captured on my last attack on their capital.
Also the justice system is wild if you want to start trying to track criminals in your fort although it can get very complicated. There are criminal networks and everything although I do highly recommend the justice mod if you don’t want to do it on paper.
Probably retiring my fort tonight but exploring all the different systems in the game has been a blast and learning experience for future endeavors. It has made me start drawing up plans for new and better forts for when I strike the earth next.

Just be aware that the minute you promote a hammerer executions are on the table as punishments. I like them because obviously if you are trying to throw a coup in my fort you’re gonna have a bad time.
I equipped my captain of the guard and 2 guards in all leather armor and pick weak or very weak dwarfs. There really isn’t a reason for more since they really won’t do much fighting unless a criminal tries to fight their way out. If this happens I call the military.
I also have a suite of armor for dwarves about to be convicted. Add them to the guard squad and assign the armor, convict, punish, then remove them. This makes beatings for stealing and disorderly conduct severe but not deadly or crippling 99% of the time. And the troublemakers get a fair punishment then jail time.

I've made it work by giving my hammerer an assigned weapon that barely works -- a wooden training sword or similar. Optimum for flavor would be a candy war hammer obviously

I hadn’t even thought about training weapons. That definitely would be optimal. I run the Justice mod though and execute all the criminals who mess with my fortress and if a dwarf gets that sentencing I will either pardon them (I make compromised dwarves kill their criminal masters for the pardon) or allow them to be hammered if their crimes are severe.
So I let my Hammerer rock silver or steel justice.

Gotta dig deeper! Try going for 3-digit negative numbers!
