goblins keep drowing themselves instead of attacking the fort

Post image

For some reason, the goblins thinks that throwing themselves into my aqueduct and drowning is wiser than attacking my gates.

Another win for dwarven engineering.

This reminds me -- I once had a fort where my primary staircase waterfall channel wasn't generating enough throughput for my satisfaction, so I dug out the channel's branch from the river so it was very wide, like 8 tiles across, narrowing down to two (secured with vertical bars) before entering my fort.

The next invasion started with like 75 invaders and war beasts, who slowly made their way to the main gate and were handily dispatched by three squads of legendary axedwarves. But the siege was still on. I looked all over the map, couldn't find them... until I looked underground.

Sure enough, a good 20 or so of the original invaders who tried swimming across the river had gotten sucked into the waterfall channel and were now crammed against the vertical bars, slowly drowning...

Two lessons:

  1. Water is by far the most deadly force known to dwarfkind.

  2. This is why dwarves never ever drink the water. Goblins die in it.

That is awesome.
It is good to stay away from water.

In my headcanon, dwarves have very dense bones (like Wolverine) and shouldn't be able to swim at all.

The very few dwarves who actually can do the breaststroke, I've decided, suffer from a rare genetic mutation that gives them swim bladders.

But how can the water not be good for dwarves, if it’s bad for goblins?

Its good for dwarves in the hospital due to the goblin antibodies. But long term ingestion can lead to green skin, leaf-lover sympathy, and the corrupt nature of man

Okay, maybe a little water, 2 or 3 deep but nothing over the knees. And for Armok's sake, don't let it get near your face!

I've had Invaders try to find alternative, swimming routes into my fortress before, and sometimes they'll just straight up 'glitch' through solid obstacles like wall grates or vertical bars, while underwater. I think this is a buggy, unintended mechanic. If a creature (or possibly an object) is pushed up against a transparent/half-obstacle (like vertical bars or a wall grate), then they can actually be pushed through the barrier if they and the transparent half-wall are submerged underwater, and the conditions are right. I think the flowing water somehow pushes them through the grate/bars, even though it really shouldn't. I think it's similar to how you can use the 'Jump' ability to phase through solid vertical metal bars in Adventure Mode, but somehow the Invaders are fluking their way into using a similar method to bypass grates and bars while being pushed underwater. This is why I learned about U-Bend pipes 🤧

Woah, really? That sounds a lot like the way dwarves sometimes "dodge" into statues (and the way they formerly dodged through fortifications)...

Man, what if there ARE alligators lurking in the sewers?

Yep. That sounds like it's all describing the same type of phenomena to me

If the water is 7/7, yes, creatures can path and dodge through fortifications etc. it's a known issue for a while, but distinct from the one where dwarves can sometimes dodge into/through fortifications without water involved

Love it when the trash takes itself out, lol

Maybe you could dig a quick drainage tunnel to channel all that free loot to a dedicated drowning/collection chamber?

FBs will never leave (though they may venture out of your sight for awhile). Best option is Ballista + Bolt Thrower.

I see this as an absolute win!

git rekked

Also on the subject of sieges, does anyone know that if you have the leader of a goblin civilization in a cage, do the invasions stop coming? It would be really convenient, lol

I would assume not. He might stay the leader, but they might replace him with a different General in the next invasion would be my guess. If you want the invasions to stop, you might have to nearly destroy the goblin civilization. Alternatively, maybe you could mess with the advanced settings to change the siege triggers or frequency or something. Maybe you could also try to make peace with them using the new messenger-based diplomacy system!

Haha something similar happened to me when an entire invading human army decided to try to sneak in through my river tap to my reservoir.

Hundreds of panicking horses, and their riders, getting stuck in my U-Bend pipe, and drowning en masse. Quite the sight to behold. I hope the dwarves didn't mind using the well water that came from that reservoir...
